PERSONALITY IN-DEPTH
Adeline is a natural wallflower, hardly noticed or acknowledged by those passing by her down the hallways with a very weak presence, in spite of being a prefect for two terms straight. Very softspoken to the point where her voice could be considered a whisper at its normal volume, she has difficulty speaking to others or putting her thoughts into words, as much as she would like to say more than what she gives. In spite of this, she is actually very friendly and cheerful, almost never seen without a smile on her face where one could wonder whether her cheeks hurt from smiling so much; she adores helping others in any way she possibly could, whether it be assisting in a simple task or listening to what they need to say. It gets to the point where she's putting aside her own well-being on purpose for their sake, willing to go as far as to try and shoulder every burden and task all on her own without asking her friends for help.

A pacifist at heart, she would never resort to physical violence - even if her life was at stake - and would avoid telling others her opinions in fear of sparking more disagreement and rebuttal if she were to take sides. Adeline rarely trusts herself, plagued with self-hatred and being terribly self-conscious in her mannerisms, often going with the flow of what others tell her to do and asking for their thoughts on the matter rather than trying to think on her own to avoid making a mistake that she would regret. The tendency is almost natural to her, and she despises herself more for it: being a parasite who always leans on others for support, unable to leave the nest to fend for herself. Her self-esteem issues had reached a point where she has thoroughly come to accept that she's very mundane and plain that almost nobody wanted her around, that she was just an insignificant being within the world no matter how much she tried to prove her worth. She finds it very inappropriate for others to be concerned for her well-being, often passing it off as nothing and that it was something typical for her fragile disposition.

Intuitive and sensitive to the needs of others, she's able to give space when it's required, but finds it difficult to leave people alone, a strange sense of justice stringing her along. Quick to do what she believes is right, Adeline trusts people a little too easily; her lack of self-confidence can make her slow to decide what would be the correct course of action and her indecisiveness drags her down even further. When the goal is right and will help someone, even in the littlest ways possible, she'll put all of her effort into it to the point that she may overwork herself as a result. With a strong sense of loyalty to her friends who she subconsciously treasures over others, she puts everyone over herself and tends to view acquaintances as friends; however, she doesn't want others to try and help her, let alone care about her well-being, unmaterialistic as a result. Going to great lengths to protect her friends and willing to sacrifice her life for them, Adeline fears all of them falling out of her reach, making her reluctant to change.

Despite being a relatively intelligent young girl, she succumbs easily to panic when put on the spot. This often renders her unable to articulate herself well or make use of the knowledge that she otherwise possesses. Adeline views herself as inadequate or useless in many respects and constantly apologizes for it. But whether unconsciously or not, she still yearns to win the approval of the people around her.

APPEARANCE
A rather petite girl with a light build that makes her almost feather-weight in a sense, Adeline seems slightly younger than her true age, seeming almost child-like. Her skin is very pale color and her physique emphasizes her very fragile and weak state in comparison to others; the sickly skin tone only appears much more pallid when placed against her waist-length soft black hair. She seems to always have a smile etched across her features, and accompanied with her violet (or golden) doe-like eyes, it gives the impression of an innocent and shy person, only further added onto with her quiet voice. One could consider her very mouse-y in that respect, making her presence very weak and difficult to notice.

When she is not adorning the school uniform - whether it be off-campus or more for casual occasions -, she dresses very modestly with clothes that don't show off much cleavage or skin. She drifts more towards light and pastel colors, particularly those of lavenders and off-whites, with very dark stockings or leggings. Adeline prefers dresses and skirts due to how easy they are to put on, but she would rarely pass down the opportunity to wear a hoodie to hide in, especially when they're a bit loose and big on her (which isn't very difficult because of how small she is). One would never find her without her precious heirloom necklace dangling around her neck. Running down her right shoulder vertically are pink, flashing numbers placed on a black backdrop that countdown the time left until she dies.

SUMMARY
Born under a family of gifted elites - the Tempos - in Marseilles, Adeline and her brother were given utmost care by their parents, becoming inseparable as though they were glued to one another. While Kearn was a very precocious child with a natural affinity in several fields, the younger twin lagged behind with her physically weaker body. Time and time again, she was overshadowed by her brother, and overcome with jealousy, wished for Kearn to disappear. When it actually happened and her parents bickered with one another, she found herself filled with regret. Ten days later, he reappeared and the family rekindled itself.

Her mother was often spurned by the rest of the Tempo family for defiling their name. In order to have her relatives take back what they said, Adeline tried her best when she and Kearn were transferred to a public school. Once again, Kearn exceeded to levels beyond what she could reach and she had difficulty making friends with her overconfident, egotistical attitude. She did, however, gain the support of someone she began to call her best friend - Callum Ainsworth. With his assistance, she joined several sports, only to be dissatisfied with never being captain or leader. That very same dissatisfaction led to her christening of Lamia and the death of her classmates.

While her mother and brother lived in America, she left them without a word to rejoin her father back in France. Her father, having fallen into immediate depression after the divorce, had become drunk and spoke ill of his marriage and children. Callum had urged her to go back to the United States, and Lamia reluctantly agreed at the cost of her best friend's supposed death.

At the age of 15, she and Kearn took their first steps onto the gifted academy, Beata.

MEMOIR
「 Ⅰ. P R E L U D E 」

On the western side of Europe, the cries of two babies were heard from a very humble hospital in the urban parts of France. A set of fraternal twins were born, and together, they were granted the names of ‘Adeline’ and ‘Kearn’ - christened with Yun-Hee and Dae-Sung as well - as they were cradled in the arms of their loving mother. Growing up together, they were practically inseparable, some considering it as though they were attached to each other's’ hips; one would never be seen without the other. The older brother - by just a few seconds - was a blessed, precocious child who had excelled at many of the activities he participated in, especially martial arts, grabbing the attention of the paparazzi at a very early age. Everywhere he went, he found himself almost bombarded with cameras and questions about how he wished to continue with his future while his younger sister was left in the shadows, forgotten and ignored by many. In spite of the differences between the two of them, their parents provided them with everything they needed along with the care and attention that were necessary for children to be healthy. She was happy throughout all of those years and loved her family back wholeheartedly, but she never understood why she was different from the shining star that was her brother. Her body had always been weaker and she couldn’t catch up to his pace. For the longest time, she couldn’t help but think that the white stork made a mistake of delivering her to her parents. To stop her from pondering about it, she was assured by her mother that she was very special in her own right and that the stork didn’t make a mistake because her parents loved her the moment that they received her. Even though she was happy with the things they said, she couldn’t find herself put at ease by it. If she really was so special, then why was it that her brother was the only one that others paid attention to? Why was she always left behind?

Her mother noticed this immediately, and put more time towards her little girl when she was off from work. Adeline’s fondest memories were of the mundane moments they had together, looking through telescopes at the beautiful night sky filled with points of light; their father would often catch them both up late together and would lovingly chastise them to go to bed.

”Mama, what are those lights out there?”

“They’re called stars. Even though they may be small and some might consider them insignificant in the vast night sky, they still struggle and shine so that people might notice them. And notice them they will.”

Those special moments, the ones that Kearn wasn’t a part of and that the experience was special, just for her, helped to subdue her toxic thoughts of jealousy while her curiosity and fascination with otherworldly, ethereal celestial bodies grew - especially towards the little gems they called the stars. It fascinated her, knowing that there could be countless worlds out there that everyone might not know about, that Earth was a small speck out of the billions out there. There were so many things that she couldn’t understand yet, but her mother would always reassure her that she would know in due time, as she continued to get older.

When Adeline was finally old enough to go play outside on her own by her parents’ standards at the age of nine, she met others who eventually became her friends and playmates. They would constantly go on adventures with her brother, venturing off as though they were heroes of their own story where she would be the leader, commanding her squadron. While they were scolded from time to time about the recklessness about their exploits, none of them took much heed to it when all they wanted was to enjoy themselves and have fun like the kids that they were. However, the storytelling that they had ceased to a halt, their grand endeavors never to be completed after one fateful day in winter.

The nearby lake was frozen over with a glassy surface of ice, the surrounding area coated with a powder that everyone was calling ‘snow’. It seemed to be falling from the cloudy gray sky as well, sun shining brightly as it peaked out from one of those fluffy white puffs. Although there were warning signs not to approach or get too close, the motley bunch of children ignored it, bringing with them shoes with silver blades at the bottom. Ice skates, one of the older members of the group had said. Slowly, each of them stepped onto the ice, slipping and sliding about. Kearn expressed doubts, saying that maybe they should consider getting off, especially when adults were yelling at them to stop. She waved it off, saying that it was nothing to worry about because they were just having a bunch of fun.

”형, come on! It’ll be okay! Get on the ice already~”

As she skidded to a halt, thin layers of frost spewing into the air from the action, a resounding crack! loudly made its debut. Golden yellow eyes widened as the splits continued to branch off from one another from underneath her, as though it were a tree growing at an unnatural speed. One moment, she was reaching her hand out to her brother, who had his fingers outstretched in a futile effort to grab her. The next, it was pitch black as the world became cold, sending chills down her spine as her entire body was submerged under.

”Yun-hee…!”

「 Ⅱ. D E V E L O P M E N T」

Bright, blinding lights were what greeted her when her eyes finally fluttered open. She could vaguely remember what had happened, only the relieved sighs and desperate hugs from her family; her mother may have been sobbing as she clutched the tiny body close to her - there were wet splotches on the white gown that she had been given to wear, but from when and why, she didn’t know. Her stay in the hospital was only the first of many as they kept bringing her back for tests, to make sure that she was okay and “healthy”, as they liked to put it. From there, her quiet and peaceful life, the safe haven and delusions she had, trying to believe that she was still special and didn’t have to be compared to her brother all the time seemed to have vanished and dissipated with the news.

”Your daughter’s physical strength will most likely never recover from this point onward. She was already weak to begin with, but she’ll be even frailer now.”

Even if she couldn’t understand half of the words that had been said nor the expressions on her parents faces, something about them told her that it was bad, that it was overly concerning and worried. The only thing she could do was give them a reassuring smile that everything would - hopefully - be okay. News and articles went around everywhere about the incident, about how the prestigious little boy’s twin sister had gotten into an accident. Everywhere, cameras were flashing and shoving themselves into Kearn’s face, asking him questions about what had happened. Eventually, their government-working relatives managed to get them to stop and close them off. The attention she got was fine, but… always, always, always, they never referred to her by name. ‘Kearn’s little sister’, ‘Kearn’s sibling’, it was constantly about Kearn no matter what. She was so frustrated and angry about it.

”Why can’t you just disappear already?! If you did… people would finally think of me instead of you!”

There were tears that threatened to spill over from the corner of his vibrant blue eyes, but they never fell. Instead, all that came was a nervous smile and laugh before he left the room quietly without another word.

Soon afterwards, she regretted that wish. Another incident happened. While she was still stuck inside the hospital and her brother was walking home from school, he mysteriously vanished one day, the only signs left behind were his dropped school bags and notebooks - those were retrieved and sent to their parents almost immediately. Inside them, there was a letter addressed to her and only her. It was sealed up in one of the old vanilla envelopes with the seal that people had to lick on so that it would stick. The contents of it weren’t what she had been expecting: an apology about all of it, how he had made it so that nobody was paying attention to her and how he would make it up to her. Enough of it made her realize how petty and childish her behavior had been, and that if she could, she would revoke what she had told him. Even though nobody had paid any notice to her, her parents and especially Kearn, always showered her in affection and care that she didn’t realize was so precious and important until then.

There were many faces that went in and out, people that she couldn’t remember the names of as the lenses of cameras were finally pointed to her as she sat on the cot, but this wasn’t what she wanted. Not this kind of attention. This was the only solace she had, what could’ve been the final words from her twin brother as she hoped for his return; she went to desperate measures, even getting on her knees and praying to a God that may not have existed, trying to deny his disappearance, trying to convince herself that he would come back no matter what.

A week had passed since then, and while she didn’t have to go to the hospital anymore and could finally return home, it didn’t feel like home. It felt empty and very quiet, eerie even. There wasn’t any of the familiar laughter or a shadow creeping up onto her to pounce on from behind, wrapping his arms gently around her delicate frame. None of the mellifluous sweet tunes from the violin lying in the corner, looking dustier and more ancient than the prim and shining instrument it used to be. Adeline found herself constantly curling up in her bed and crying as her parents began to argue against each other in the kitchen, shouting and shoving each other. All she could do was seek comfort in the dark abyss of her unlit room for what felt like an eternity. The one time she tried to intervene did nothing. They kept arguing and arguing about something she couldn’t understand…

”Can everything go back to normal? Pl-please...? I’ll do anything for it to happen. Just let my family be happy again!”

The miracle happened. Ten days after he had disappeared, her brother returned, slightly beaten and bruised, wearing dirty rags and holding a dirk in his hands as he was carried by one of their uncles to the house doorsteps. Ecstatic was an understatement about how pleased her parents were to see their son again. While their more influential relatives worked towards keeping the news away from them, the family slowly started to rekindle their lost bonds with one another. To say that she wasn’t happy herself would be a lie. She was very happy to see him again… The kind of goofy smile he had on his features and how he apologized for making everyone worry about him and that everything would be fine now, that he wouldn’t disappear again.

”사랑해 형.”

“나도 사랑해.”

「 Ⅲ. R E C A P I T U L A T I O N 」

Only a mere few months later, the head of the Tempo family announced his decision to hold a family reunion for all of them to gather together as some of the current generation children were beginning to graduate from high school and move onto college with their own lives. As the gathering took place, it seemed to her shock that she was the only female child present, the others her age or in the same generation being male. Though Kearn made light conversation and discussions here and there, Adeline took the initiative in leading them through with bright smiles, only more happily so because it seemed as though everything back at home was finally back to the way it should be. There, grandparents spoke of the mysterious powers they had over time and gave down the oral tale of how their family came to be.

A young peasant boy born as part of the third estate so long ago was on the verge of death due to a deadly plague spreading across the entire continent. His parents desperately took him to the church for a cure, but the priests only turned them away with a firm refusal that they could do anything. The father was unwilling to give up and laid him down by the statue of the Virgin Mary, pleading for her to do something to save his son. As though prayers were answered, the once considered dead boy miraculously was healed and with him came the ability to manipulate time. He grew up to be a handsome individual with a modest disposition, working fervently to improve his family’s status in any way he could, even though many told him it would be impossible.

One day, he met a noble lady with whom he fell in love with at first sight. However, she did not share his feelings despite his valiant efforts to get her attention. That was, until he forged with his very own hands what many considered the most beautiful necklace of all time and offered it to her in proposal. They immediately wedded afterwards, despite the protests that the Ancien Regime should not be broken and that the social classes should stay separated. Many say that they lived happily ever after with many children, the descendants flourishing with powers over time, much like the one who started it all. The necklace still existed and was passed onto the eldest female of the current generation as was their practice of creating their own jewelry to sell.

All of it fascinated her, that everyone around her had supernatural powers over something so powerful. What she had started off with, playing superhero with her playmates before could actually be something that she could really become. She could actually become a hero that everyone admired and wanted to be like. However, they were sworn to secrecy to not say anything because many of their gifts hadn’t blossomed yet and they would receive proper training at a prestigious academy in Athens when the time came. The nine year-old girl couldn’t understand why her mother only had a sad smile on her face as the party went on, not realizing that her mother was hoping that she could lead a normal life, away from the gifted world.

The news wasn’t noiseless, after all. The House of Tempo was a very wealthy and affluent family with a long lineage of those with the powers of time mixed into their blood. What was valued the most was the ability to control aspects of it; thus it had been a rumpus when they heard that one of the prized sons had eloped with a simple girl and their children were rumored to not have the ability to manipulate those precious components - only to steal and give away their own time to others. It had been a great debate as to whether the twins should have been accepted into the family or considered possible heirs as heads… Worse even was that many of her aunts and uncles whispered about how they were going to refuse passing the necklace down to Adeline, only because they abhorred her mother for ‘staining’ their blood and the good name of the Tempo house. Once it seemed to spread down to the children, those of her age who had been fondling over her in teases seemed to become bullies within one fell swoop. A party that was supposed to be happy, like a paradise, corrupted into a hellish nightmare that didn’t want to end, despite the five days that the celebration was supposed to be going on for.

For being a sheltered girl for the most part, attending private school and transitioning into a public one when she turned eleven with her brother seemed to make her heart race even faster each day. While she had accidentally came out with a very dramatic entrance, being late to class on her first day, Adeline found difficulty making friends. Many accused her of being too confident or stubborn but she was determined to make the relatives who talked badly about her mother take back everything they said. Kearn joined her and together, they tried their best. But like before, she was constantly outclassed by her older brother. His achievements as a champion in their martial arts competitions, being at the top of the class in all subjects, and being a naturally gifted violinist meant that everyone was always praising and noticing him.

Just like before, nobody was truly referring to her by name. When they did, it was always given the attachment ‘just like Kearn’. She constantly dismissed it, saying that it was ridiculous, that there was no way that she would get jealous again, that she had learned her lesson from before and that, like her mother said, she was special, even if others wouldn’t notice yet. Yet, for some reason, she knew, deep down, of how envious she was at the compliments her brother got and how so many people held him in high regard - he had many friends, many who wanted to talk to him, and even when he sat with her during lunch and at breaks, she felt that it was so unfair. There were a few here and there who tried to pretend that she didn’t exist when she was trying to speak, talking loudly over her until she got furious enough to try and hurt them; Kearn would hold her back and comfort her when they got home.

”Mama… I’m special, right?”

“Of course. Not everyone notices right away, but they will one day. If you find yourself straying away from the thought that you’re not, just look up at the stars to guide you. They’ll always be there.”

That didn’t make any sense, not in the slightest. Stars only showed up at night. When Adeline inquiried Kearn about it, he told her that the sun was actually a star too, but it was very dangerous to look at directly because it could blind her. So what should she look at? What stars were her mother talking about?

One day, her father was watching a sports program on television on the couch and invited her to sit down with him. Normally, she wasn’t very interested in those games, only because they never caught her attention much and it didn’t make sense to her at how hysterical some people could be with their teams. She sat down anyway, watching the game go on as muscular men sprinted and dashed across fields, a ball juggling at their feet and a crowd going crazy when the French team scored multiple goals in succession of one another. The action fascinated her for awhile, at how speedy they were and how they had the endurance to play. As reporters interviewed one of the younger players, they called him a shining star among men. It occurred to her that that must have been what her mother meant.

Immediately, Adeline found herself training and learning the game, doing well enough to join the team in the following year. A boy she had met - Callum Ainsworth - had transferred into the school recently after being homeschooled for so long, and they clicked immediately. He would motivate and help cheer her on in their matches, and he was a good supportive person overall. While she didn’t find any other friends, she found a friend in him and the best part was that he got along very well with Kearn too and their parents interacted swimmingly with one another. Best friend, he had called her one day. And she agreed with the sentiment. However, to her dissatisfaction, the soccer club leader never felt that she was good enough to promote to being a captain at one point or another or take a chance at it, no matter how hard she tried. No matter how hard she tried, she was still outclassed by others. Thus, halfway through the season, she signed a resignation form to quit and try something else.

One of the senior members of the club scolded her for behavior, at how arrogant and childish she had been, going as far as to slap her on the face as though to snap her out of it. What happened next was a complete blur - there was a glowing yellow light that enveloped the entire room and then suddenly, there were corpses laid at her feet, blood splattering every wall in vermilion. Police officers arrived at the scene, and once again, the paparazzi tried to get every detail about it.

Adeline didn’t want any of it, terrified and traumatized by the very idea that she had killed other humans. The sensation of having been stained with someone’s blood was too much of a guilt for her to bear. The girl cried and cried for days on end, and none of the efforts made by her family or Callum managed to get through to her.

Days trickled by as her indifferent classmates went on and called her a monster for the deed she had committed, murdering the innocent for something so pointless and trivial. And she agreed with it, finding herself very reclusive and retreating to the music room whenever she could. The only solace she could find was in music and art, something she did in secret whenever others couldn’t see her. Otherwise, they might exploit that too. After all, what kind of monster was so interested in stupid as those things? While the name-calling never stopped, it got worse as she was finally given a label, a tag that replaced her true name that became forgotten: Lamia, after the snake monster who stole away children at night to eat them out of envy of others. She found herself wanting to laugh and cry at how ironic everything was.

Something was going wrong still. One day, her parents told her to pack up all of her things and leave. She wasn’t told why and Kearn didn’t seem to have an answer either, but they both obediently gathered their belongings and left. They were going to the Americas, a faraway place that history always said was good for new beginnings and a second chance at life. As she looked at the window through the bus they were on, she could faintly see her old house on the top of the hill… and it was burning. She didn’t know why, but her chest hurt upon seeing it. It’s as though her precious memories, of the time that she was called ‘Adeline’ had burned with it.

Upon registration for citizenship in the new land, she requested her name to be officially known as Lamia. Her old life had completely burned away. It didn’t exist. Her parents were very disheartened by it, and Kearn practically pleaded for her to not choose it. As stubborn as usual, she went through with the name change.

While her father trained the two children in mastering their gifts, her mother saw that it wasn’t the best idea, that they should wait until they’re older to go to an official school for it, trying to delay the idea that they should be taught when they were too young. A fire was fueled violently, and they digressed back into their stage of fighting with one another, the same way they did when Kearn disappeared back then. Her father began to agree with his fellow kin about how his wife defiled the Tempo name and eventually demanded for a divorce that went through. On her and her brother’s 13th birthday, they saw their papa for the last time as he took the ticket to head back to France and everything with him. She could faintly remember how much her mother tried to provide for them back then yet crying at night when she thought her children were asleep. The situation was very difficult, mama couldn’t take care of both of them, so…

Quietly, without warning - six months later -, Adeline took her things and left, following her father’s steps.

”사랑해 엄마…”

「 Ⅳ. C O D A 」

The decision was a poor one. While one of her relatives helped her find her father again and dumped her at his footsteps, it seemed that he had fallen into an immediate depression, struggling to take care of himself. He resorted to drinking and drugs, getting drunk every night possible and selling himself out to other women to try and find something thrilling and exciting within him, trying to spark a passion that already disappeared. Whenever he came home, he would take his anger out on her, smashing bottles whenever he was and spewing things about how it would be better that he never married or had children, at how much better it would be if Kearn and her had never been born.

Word caught on, and Callum convinced her to move back to her mother as soon as possible. With a disheartened sigh, she agreed, hoping that she wouldn’t be a burden when she came back. He had told her that she wouldn’t be. It was even more set when it seemed that Kearn had gotten accepted into Beata Academy and the letter arrived in her mailbox as well. That was the final stone cast. Once everything she had packed was ready, she got ready to head to the airport.

On the way there, she was accompanied by Callum. When she wasn’t paying attention, crossing a street when the light was still green, everything happened all too quickly.

”Move…!”

She was standing upright at one moment, and the next, she was sitting on the concrete, watching her best friend get run over and rushed to the hospital. They wouldn’t let her get admitted to see him, and the clock was ticking. Her plane would be leaving soon if she didn’t hurry… Without looking back, crying, she boarded and left him behind, not knowing what had happened and only under the impression that he was dead.

Her mother and brother greeted her with open arms, clutching her close as she came back. They would keep her company and help her rest as nightmares plagued her mind and the night terrors continued for months on end without any signs of stopping. She knew that she wasn’t very good at many things and it was becoming more and more difficult for her to talk to others, a speech impediment forming as the guilt ate away at her. Though they were very important to her, she wished that she could know that everything was alright back then. Callum and her father were important to her too, but still, she couldn’t let anyone know about her feelings.

The girl always wore a smile and no tear was shed since then. She continued with her life as a student until the day that she would be going to Beata.

There, as they were exchanging kisses and hugs at the airport, sitting once more with her luggage, her brother seated next to her, her mother gave her a farewell gift that she knew - more than anything - was something very very important. Her mother had told her to close her eyes, and obediently, she listened and when her mother told her to open them, she saw the new accessory hanging from her neck. A golden necklace with a ruby embedded in the center, eerily mimicking the gear of a clock in its own right. It was the necklace from the family story from before… She wanted to protest that she didn’t deserve it, that someone else she had keep it instead, but her mother had lowered her hands, holding them as they tried to click the treasure off, and assured her that it was hers, that she would be able to take care of it better than anyone else would.

When Kearn joined in and told her that she should keep it as well, she found that she couldn’t disagree with either of them and promised she would do her best to keep it safe. As the intercom crackled to life that their flight would be departing momentarily, she exchanged a final hug with her mother and stepped onto the platform towards a new place she had never heard of. Beata Academy… It scared her, thinking about how many people her age also had those superpowers. They could kill too… But none of them could be as bad as her.

Her brother squeezed her hand tightly, telling her it would be alright. And she smiled.

Was she happy…?

”I’m s-sorry… f-f-for everything.”

No... She didn't deserve that much. But maybe, maybe she could make other people happy instead.

RELATIONSHIPS IN-DEPTH

mason 'magic' stein

  • current impression | A treasured and dear friend of hers... maybe? Very stand-offish, aggressive, and prickly to many, Adeline finds many of those accusations wrong and that, if people took the time to get to know him, Magic is a very kind and wonderful person. He always treats her very nicely, and being around him makes her much more comfortable while spurring up the fear of dying and making her queasy at the same time. His presence is one she strongly relies on, much to her own chagrin, and while she wishes to grow closer to him, she believes it wouldn't end well and suppresses those desires; the feeling is unlikely to be mutual. She could only wish that he would stop caring about her so much.

bartholomew 'barry' jackson

  • current impression | Although she originally interacted with Barry because he was friends with Magic and Aspen, Adeline has grown to consider him a very reliable and wonderful friend. She has difficulty predicting what he will do next and he has a habit of rushing into things impulsively, but that part of him is something that she strongly admires, though it would be better if he had a better sense of self-preservation, especially after everything that has happened. Barry has a strange tendency to catch her by surprise a lot, though it's usually rather welcoming.

kearn tempo

  • current impression | Her irreplaceable and most cherished twin brother, Kearn is everything that she isn't. Sporty, highly intelligent, and a calming and friendly presence to all; he's rather popular at his school for many reasons. In spite of that, he always finds time to talk to her, and when they were children, the two of them were practically inseparable. Adeline strongly respects him and supports him while he does the same for her, even though they're apart now. Even so, she still can't help but feel a bit envious of how powerful and successful her brother is, though it's something she has come to terms with.

jonathan kent

  • current impression | Fellow café worker, Jonathan has always been quite the charming student and a shining example of how to be social. While she hasn't interacted with him much outside of their shared job together, Adeline admires his tenacity to keep getting stronger. She has doubts that she'll see him again anytime soon, and most of all, she's hoping that he never finds out that she was the one who woke him up from his coma. Hopefully they can continue to work together for awhile longer.

callum ainsworth

  • current impression | Childhood friend...? Adeline is certain that they had gone to school together since kindergarten and that they were close for the longest time, and outside of Kearn, he was her next go-to person when she needed to talk to someone. Her mind remembers him as a very cheerful, bright, and optimistic boy who always cared for others, especially his little brother. Something seemed off when she saw him on her 17th birthday, and before that, Christmas...

PERSONALITY IN-DEPTH
Child prodigy with the IQ of a genius, Nicola isn't the typical sort of smart student. She has a tendency to find herself in very odd situations in attempts to entertain herself or have a bit of fun, though her higher intelligence makes it so easy for her to become bored. Often, she'll strike up conversation with others and socialize with them without too much trouble, but unless they continue to catch her interest, she'll immediately drop talking to them to find someone more amusing. Her interactions with others is more for the experience than to develop relationships, as she doesn't want to be held back by others. It's difficult for her to dig through heavy textbooks to the point where she will rarely read anything; better to experience everything first hand than rely on some old geezer to tell her everything about it. Considering herself someone who has a decent eye at reading people, she bases them off of first impressions and finds herself severely disappointed if they don't manage to break the mold she gave them.

Nicola has a fondness for the unpredictable, something likening towards chaos sometimes. Being able to stand out from the crowd and think in an unorthodox manner is something that she prides herself in, unafraid to do things recklessly if only to surprise someone and catch them off-guard. She won't hesitate to jump straight to the point and express her honest opinion, speaking her mind without fear of what others think about her. Quick to criticize and point out others' flaws, it gives the impression that she views herself on a higher pedestal than everyone around her, though it's more that she is fine with telling people exactly how she feels about them than anything; she could care less about whether or not it damages someone's self-esteem or that it makes people think less about her. It is not to say that she's apathetic though she has a strong belief in the idea that nothing can be solved unless people are willing to own up to their mistakes and face them head-on; what she says about them is a nudge in that direction.

If there's anything that catches her interest and really intrigues her, she would stop at nothing to get it completed or to find out everything about it. There's no budging her or trying to sway her from the intense amount of concentration she builds up, to the point where it's impossible to persuade her to do something else and that they would have to assist her in finishing. Unfortunately, if it involves experimentation, Nicola won't hesitate in using anyone who freely asks to help as a guinea pig and casually brush it off if there might be a nearly fatal consequence before moving on. She's a science addict and she tends to enjoy dissecting the hidden meaning or formulas of things within her brain, trying to figure out how things work and dissecting everything until she knows as much as remotely possible. This stubborn nature leaks strongly into defending herself and she's rarely the kind to admit defeat, let alone think about retreating.

Unlike many people her age, Nicola is much more down-to-earth and doesn't flirt with the idea of being hopeful and expecting things to happen so easily simply because a person believes they can do it. Despite her very lazy attitude, she doesn't think people should go around spreading hopes and all of this nonsense about dreaming if they aren't putting the effort into accomplishing things. She's not the kind to hesitate in knocking some sense into others and crushing their goals when she feels that it's not reasonable to reach with that person's capabilities, especially when they think that everything will simply work out and they aren't willing to try to do anything to reach it. The amount of work and effort someone puts into something is what determines their value and ability to obtain the things they so dearly desire, in her opinion. She despises those who are dreadfully optimistic out of reason and even more so, those who claim they have talents without trying.

APPEARANCE
As a partial albino, Nicola has very fair light skin and ashen white hair slightly overgrown from negligence and refusal to cut it. It's often rather messy with a particular long strand curving over the bridge of her nose slightly, lazily combed. Her body is rather lean and her height is of about average for her age. Many consider her eyes to be very cat-like in their appearance, contrasting with the fact that they are a deep blue in color. While many don't notice it, her irises differ in shades with her left eye being slightly paler than her right. She often wears a very bored and drowsy expression, her interesting perking up with slight intonations in her voice, which uses rather limited and childish vocabulary and pokes fun as though she were a kid.

When she isn't in her uniform, she tends to resort to wearing thin, long-sleeved clothes or light sweaters with jeans or pants. Although Nicola will rarely be found in the sun and her clothing choice is only logical due to her susceptibility to getting sunburns, she would prefer to be able to put on more summer-y or sailor-esque clothes, something she picked up from her father, though she never bothers trying to do so. Even so, Nicola will never be seen without her marine cap - a gift from said dad from when she was younger - or at least one box of Pocky in her bags or hands somewhere. She keeps a Rubik's Cube keychain on her to play with in the case that she gets very bored.

RELATIONSHIPS OVERVIEW

SIBLINGS | Hieta Kresnik
OTHER RELATIVES | Lulu
LOVE INTEREST | Madison Morse

FRIENDS | Madison Morse · Leo Herman · Keo Van Schwantz
ENEMIES | Owen Darcy
NEUTRAL | Aleta Herman

RELATIONSHIPS IN-DEPTH

madison morse

  • current impression | Shy, awkward, plain, but very interesting are the first few words to pop into Nicola's mind when she thinks about Madison. Her roommate is very weird, and without a doubt, most likely has a few screws loose, but something about her is amusing and entertaining; Madison is a good friend and not a terrible punching bag to toss a few teases and lighthearted remarks at. Though, because of what's happened in the past, Nicola's found herself wary about being so blunt around Madison... At least she managed to spice things up with that drunken kiss one time. Not that Nicola enjoyed it or anything. It simply caught her off-guard.

owen darcy

  • current impression | Everyone's very friendly and wonderful Flashlight named Owen. Although she can't recall who exactly was the one who started calling him that, the nickname has stuck ever since. Nicola will rarely call him by his actual name, something she reserves for more serious situations, though she's been figuring that it might be better to find something that's a bit less demeaning to use. He's a dependable person, though maybe too optimistic for her liking, though it's a given with his gift. Now that the're in the same dorm with each other and they're seeing each other daily, she's finding his presence more enjoyable and whatever tension they had dying down as their lives resumed to more normal standards. In the end, he's still just a Flashlight. A very useful and helpful one. He's an awful human being.

keo van schwantz

  • current impression | A chance encounter at the library when the internet couldn't give her any answers to the question that popped up into her mind, Keo had made a very clumsy and over-hyper impression on her, yet the other girl continued to entertain and do something different than what Nicola had expected from her. Keo made for a very interesting and amusing conversation partner compared to some of the other students Nicola had spoken with at the academy, and she wouldn't mind running into Keo again in the future. Things are more lively around her.

aleta herman

  • current impression | The fallen angel of the school, overshadowed by her brother in more ways than one. Nicola can't deny that she's on better terms with Leo and likes him more than she does Aleta, but that doesn't mean that Aleta isn't terrible. She is an enjoyable presence every once in awhile when they do see each other, though Nicola wouldn't care all that much if they fell out of contact... probably.

hieta kresnik

  • current impression | An older half-brother with whom her relationships with can be constantly fluctuating. While she cares for him and has twinges of regret for being the one who got him killed in the first place, his overprotective and helicopter nature tends to get on her nerves when she wants to be more independent. Yet, in spite of all of that, Nicola finds herself constantly asking him to help her with various tasks and rely on him to do her dirty work for her, something that he doesn't bother arguing back against even when he could, which annoys her more. She has trouble coming to terms with the fact that her brother is actually dead, tending to the fact that her interactions with him are very much the same as when he was alive.

leo herman

  • current impression | Beata Academy's very own resident angel who, not only is a prefect, but is pretty much everyone's favorite person as well. Leo is what everyone would expect from an angel - kindhearted, caring, and nice to practically every single individual possible. While it's a bit of a bore that he doesn't seem to change the formula in the same way that Devin does, Leo's presence alone makes her life more at ease and Nicola can relax without having demons lunging at her every single second to try and feed off her energy or free their enslaved kin, and for that, she is grateful... Too bad it messed with her preferred disorderly lifestyle, though it did give her the chance to find different ways to entertain herself. She knows to turn to him if she ever really was in need of help.

MEMOIR
「「Ⅰ. E X P O S I T I O N 」

It wasn’t unusual - given the violent and chaotic nature of the world had to offer - that a little boy by the name of Graham was raised under the powerful wing of what they euphemized as a syndicate. Being raised in that sort of environment, one would expect that the child wouldn’t be very well-mannered nor as polite as he would, let alone one that took interest in such mundane things such as exploring the ancient past and ruins around him. After all, Egypt was full of relics and treasures, books of all sorts focusing purely on the kings and pyramids of a world so long ago. Because he was the bastard son of the mafia leader and the only child, he was made a reluctant heir and treated harshly as a result to learn the makings of a criminal in order to succeed and continue the job as soon as he was of age. As successful as the mafia was, his father always wanted to be on the field and work instead of relying on useless underlings to do the job for him, and as a result, he never had much time for his son, let alone how late he came back at night after his nefarious activities. They were rich and able to pay for what they had, yet nobody was able to properly take care of him as a result, and while he was neglected, he learned basic things that were necessary for survival. Education, cooking, fighting, and everything in between. Even as a child, he could tell he was more of a burden to his father than a son. It wasn’t that hard for him to read the adult’s face, especially when he brought up how much he wanted to travel around the world to see the other beautiful things about it, more importantly the Seven Wonders, but… there was always an expression the man gave that he couldn’t understand. It seemed sad and filled with distaste, and yet it felt as though that was why his father couldn’t bring himself to abandon him. Sure, his father was very indifferent towards him, the very fact that he didn’t want to leave him to really fend for himself out there was enough of a reason for him to love the man and try to help in his own right. While his father was off doing his work, Graham would stay home and cook meals while zealously working on his studies so that he could help his father in any way he could.

Naturally, as the son of a wanted criminal, he led a very secluded childhood and a life doomed to remain private to the mansion that he lived in alone. A tutor would come by every now and then to give him the necessary education that a child should receive or members of his father’s mafia would come by, but outside of that, he didn’t meet many other humans, scarcely allowed outside in the case that someone would use him as a bargaining chip to tarnish the feared name of their group - Sinclair, as it was called. It didn’t matter to him too much, seeing how maze-like the building he lived in was and how he could pretend that it was a new place for him to travel and discover each time, but eventually that grew boring as well. In order to sate the child’s growing boredom, he was gifted a larger library and a collection of books about a fictional character named Indiana Jones. While it surprised him at first that his father caught onto his interest in archaeology and didn’t resort to buying him some measly comic books, it was enough for him to think about working harder so that he could help out too. As he continued to grow up slowly, he began to grow to admire the man his father was for how powerful and self-assured he was and how gentle and kind he could be; and most of all, he aspired to be the hero and explorer that he could always be, taking trips with his father around the world and unraveling mysteries that nobody had ever managed to solve before. But of course, that was a hopeless dream in the first place. Criminals couldn’t wander around however they pleased. They had to lurk in the shadows and work in stealth… That’s what they told him all the time. He couldn’t help but keep dreaming about it anyway, to the point where he was bold enough to confront his father about it one night at the dinner table.

The table was always very long, extending almost the entire length of the dining hall, with chandeliers and lights littered throughout, yet everything was dim in an orange hue, the features of the man sitting at the center of it almost indiscernible from the darkness that cloaked it. Graham found himself swinging his feet happily as they ate the dinner he had learned to prepare earlier that day, taking heed not to be picky about his food because that was a bad thing and he had to be healthy if he wanted to help his father. While had mulled on the idea for a very long time, he wasn’t sure whether or not he should say anything yet. Would he get mad at the idea of it? Or would he dismiss it as stupid child’s play? He wasn’t sure yet, that was the problem. A gruff voice interrupted his thoughts and startled him, the fork clattering loudly onto the plate, demanding that he speak up already instead of remaining antsy. It almost always scared him a bit when his father managed to figure out that something was on his mind and he could almost read him all too easily.

”Hey, daddy? We can travel all around the world one day together, right?”

For a few moments, he had been very hopeful about the whole thing. That it would be alright, that his father would definitely say yes because that’s what should be of the relationship between a parent and child. His mother died from ‘unknown’ causes soon after he was born, so they should definitely be closer right? To make up for that lose? But the silence that he was given made him fall into despair immediately, and that there was no point in saying anything about it because his father didn’t care all that much, especially when he was so busy with his job. It was a very selfish thing for him to ask, so carefully, he opened his mouth in hopes of apologizing before his father could yell at him, but a hand signaled for him to stay silent before reaching out towards his face. Graham recoiled back, shutting his eyes closed, expecting for a smack to come in place and a long string of lectures.

What he got instead was something he never expected. Fingers were softly stroking through his hair, patting him gently, and slowly, he opened his eyes to take a look at his father, straight in the face - something that he was often told not to do because it was rude. His father was smiling at him so pleasantly, in a way that he didn’t realize was possible from such a gigantic man who was so hellbent on staying successful in his shady activities.

”Of course we can, Gray. We will one day.”

「 Ⅱ. D E V E L O P M E N T 」

How happy that made him afterwards only drove him to continue to succeed. Everything he did, he got better at, with the idea that, so long as he made his father proud, he would grab his attention enough so that he would never forget those words he made and they could work towards going on their journey together. He practically ate through his books, reading them over and over again until he memorized the words in them and could recite them by memory, studying subjects that he was told were too far ahead for his current age and reading books that were filled with vocabulary that he shouldn’t be able to understand yet. He would even write his own stories when he found himself too bored with the current ones or found their plots overly predictable. There were many nights where he would simply stay up, surrounded by books in the library, and possibly fall asleep there. It became impractical, in his humble opinion, to continue that way when he wanted to keep learning and learning so that his father would notice how hard he was working. As a result, Gray tried out all sorts of methods to stay awake but found that tea was the best, something his tutor found surprising for a child. Coffee was too bitter for him and he didn’t like it, but royal milk tea was what he could enjoy the most while keeping him alert when the moon was dangling high in the sky.

On his tenth birthday, his father told him about how it was due time for him to learn how to fight better instead of the meager and pathetic displays he had in hand-to-hand combat. He was truly taught how to defend himself and fight back under the careful instruction of his parent. While he had difficulty handling many of the sword-related weapons, to the point where it had to be called off because he messed up and cut himself too severely - enough that they had to call off the lessons for a few months in order for him to recover -, he found an uncanny proficiency with staves which eventually evolved into his usage of the guan dao. His father noticed this and realized that he couldn’t teach Gray anymore, because his expertise was in a different area, and suggested they switched to finding him a tutor from the mafia. Immediately, Gray refused the offer, trying harder and harder to use the bladed weapons that his father was so great with to no avail. Disheartened during a spar, a mistake was made and he suffered from severe blood loss, knocking him unconscious for days on end.

During that time, Gray found himself wandering in the dream world through many doors, following a white rabbit that led him everywhere. He found it strange, comparing it to the story of Alice in Wonderland in its peculiar resemblance. Within it, he wandered through many worlds and places he could never have imagined nor found in the books he read because of his limited view of everything. There were so many things that he could see that he never knew existed, and it was so ethereal and unreal to think that the minds of others could conjure such fascinations up. He journeyed through, discovering various treasures and interacted with the people inside those dreams, coming into contact with people who were supposed to be human; the conversations were supposed to be superficial, but they felt so real and he felt so alive within them, almost making him forget about the sheer concentration he had on his own dreams. When he woke up, however, he was disappointed to find that he couldn’t visit those places again. But still… That was what the outside world was like? He wanted to go out more than ever now.

He constantly pleaded with his father over and over again to let him leave the mansion’s general vicinities, but the answer was always a stark ‘no’. Not until he was able to truly fend for himself, he was told; not until he was ready, he was told; not until he was of age, he was told. It didn’t seem fair at all, when he could see children younger than him prancing and dancing about on the sand, scattering yellow clouds into the air, from outside his window. All of them had it lucky, being able to come and go however they pleased. The idea struck him. He could go outside and come back unscathed, and that would be enough to prove to his father that he was ready to leave. Gray almost felt too clever to come up with that.

Thus, he waited until his father went out on one of his regular outings for his work, and once he was sure that the man was far away enough, Gray slipped out the door and into the other world. The taste and crispness of fresh air greeted him, along with how warm the sun was shining, and the birds chirping in the air in their fun little songs as they danced throughout the sea of blue. He found himself grinning from ear to ear, laughing about at how enjoyable and fun the world seemed to be, that when his father really did take him on their trip, they would enjoy it so much. Missing out this much, knowing how vast the world truly was, it only excited him more and more about how he would one day see those things with his very own violet eyes. Taking a deep breath, he plopped onto the sand, staring up and letting himself wander off more and more into his own dreams and imaginations. He would definitely try and walk further later on, but one step at a time should be good enough for now.

Two women approached him, lips glossy red with very curvaceous bodies, pulling him onto his feet. Gray blinked for a few moments, feeling slightly uncomfortable with how close they were. His hand reached towards his pockets, the one where his retractable weapon was at, but one of them swatted it away while the other perched his chin on the tips of her fingers, leaning in until their breaths were mingling with each other. The next words only confused him, but they sent chills down his spine, making him shiver and tremble as a sense of foreboding overcame him.

”Take him. He has his mother’s eyes.”

”Hey…! Let me go!”

”Don’t worry dearie, you’ll be safe. It wouldn’t do us well if you were harmed, after all.”

Everything went pitch black as an electrifying feeling was stabbed into his sides and he collapsed. Later, he realized that he was sitting in an unfamiliar room, body covered in bandages. A lady by the name of Emilia told him that he was in the syndicate of the faction opposing Sinclair, and that they would be using him to ‘negotiate’ with his father about handing over all of his funds and many other prized possessions. All he had to do was cooperate and there would be no harm done to him. He didn’t trust her in the slightest, but he obeyed. If he wanted to escape, he would have to be very careful about it.

He was thirteen when he was taken hostage.

「 Ⅲ. C R I S I S 」

It took a week or two for him to learn the routine schedule of the guards and especially more so, their interests and weaknesses. At will, Gray could wander through dreams of the people around him, and all they ever desired and their darkest fantasies. As a dream theorist said before, dreams were the unconscious parts of humans that they wanted to keep hidden. He learned in particular about one of the sentinels and found him the easiest to strike at with his underwhelmingly simple mind. However, he didn’t think about moving yet, not when he still had something he wanted to test out. The person outside of his cell was dozing off, the keys so easily reachable, and Gray could sense that his dreams were already surfacing forth. A soft purple-pink mist floated above the person’s head, projecting their dream to him. It was a strange one to say the least, but he touched it, the texture much like how he read cotton candy was like. Slowly, he reached towards one of the glass containers left in his cell and placed the weird substance into it. At once, the dream dissipated and he could view it from inside the bottle. For a few moments, he wondered whether it was edible or not, but he decided against that. A necklace inside the dream found his curiosity, and he soon identified it as a dreamcatcher, much like the ones that tribes had… and he took it to wear as his own.

With a newfound feeling of empowerment inside him, he stole the keys away and started his escape. The blaring alarm sounded to announce that a prisoner was escaping from the cells, but he kept moving, swift on his feet. There were many dreams around that he could use, and he stuffed as many of them into the bottle as he possibly could - or at least, the ones that seemed that they would have practical use. He wasted a lot of resources here and there, but he was getting out safe and sound so far. That was, until someone knocked the bottle away from him and shoved him into the wall, holding him by the collar of his dirtied shirt.

”Eh? A scrawny kid like this managed to get out?”

Gray found himself smiling a bit, spitting in the man’s face.

”For someone so tough, you sure get a kick out of bullying someone that isn’t your own size.”

Before the man could react, he bit onto his fingers and a resounding yelp was sounded as he was freed. Unbeknownst to whoever these people were, they never did find his guan dao stuffed into his pockets. Gray pulled it out, its full-fledged form more than twice his height as he danced around with grace mixed with the exhilaration of battle, knocking those off their feet and plunging the blades deep into their flesh as crimson red pooled across the floor. There were a lot of things he couldn’t understand, and death had to be one of them. He knew that it meant that they had departed from the living, but there was never any reason to be happy or sad about it. It made sense, otherwise there would be overpopulation, which was a real problem after all. So there he went, taking the lives of many in his escape.

To his surprise, he found his father storming through the bases in a desperate search for him. While there were many things that it seemed his parent wanted to tell him, they knew that it had to wait until later, when they were in a zone of safety. Fleeing the area went far more smoothly than one would expect, especially with the help of the other mafia members. Supposedly, there were very few casualties too and not many too fatally wounded. That seemed like a victory in its own right. However, he knew that his father would go home and yell at him the moment he could, especially when he had been warned so many times beforehand that he shouldn’t be running around outside when there were too many things he didn’t understand. That wasn’t what happened though.

He could see a twinkle in his father’s periwinkle eyes, the rigid shape of a grin etched on his features. A gesture that he once thought was so foreign and strange became known again, white hair ruffled as his face brightened at the very words that were uttered in that moment.

”I’m very proud of you, Gray.”

From then onward, his father allowed him to go outside and participate in the various missions that they had. A more first-hand experience at what Sinclair did, in any case. He found himself thrilled with everything the mafia participated in, and most of all, he found excitement whenever they were told to go eliminate someone or even the idea of lying and deceiving others. Operations continued smoothly for the longest time possible, and while he generally kept to himself when not with the group, it was clear that he was as much of a silver fox as his father was. They always complimented him about how he was truly like his father, how he would be a wonderful heir and a brilliant leader. When he reached the age of fifteen, he was officially admitted as a member while earning the trust of everyone that worked under his father’s wing. He had considerable potential that nobody could ignore, and he was promoted to a high rank that nobody wanted to disagree with nor pinpoint it as nepotism. In his inauguration, casualties lessened significantly while commodities increased, the mafia even turning towards more charitable works than the harshness it generally displayed. Everything seemed to be much more homely than before and comfortable. At work, he held a strong mask of confidence, tossing away the yielding and little boy he used to be, turning a facade into a true personality. Many of the younger girls in the mafia were fond of him as well, but he always turned down their offers, only because none of them particularly interested him. He was often in the presence of humans so often that he had a tendency to forget that he wasn’t normal as well. His father told him to keep his powers a secret, after all. And he knew the logic behind it more than anything. While others found it strange that a little boy managed to escape their enemy faction so easily, they never treated him all that differently because of it. It was brilliant, even.

Everything went well, at least from what he saw. While he had a tendency to beat away other people - sometimes rather literally for the sheer fun of it - and keep to his own company in his spare time, he never ever denied the idea of hanging out with his father. They did a lot of things that sons and fathers should always do: watching movies together, playing games like poker, having friendly spars, and talking about the most mundane of subjects. As such, he gained an unsavory name with an almost prickly attitude, as smooth of a talker as he was, and some almost joked around about how he was very much into his father and supported incest, especially with how he was always practically asking for praise. Things seemed perfectly normal.

It started going downhill when a little boy from the neighborhood tried to befriend him.

"You don't need to pretend since I already know who you are! You’re my older brother, of course.”

The idea was stupidly preposterous - he knew that he had no siblings, being a bastard child, and his father would never consider having children again after his wife died and the danger that it could put them into. One heir was enough. Yet, Gray found himself warming up to the child very slowly, despite knowing, deep down, it was troublesome and that it wouldn’t be worth it in the end. He would read to the little boy, write stories for him, and he went as far as to create sock puppets to give him a bit more entertainment with a little stage and prop and all of those things since he couldn’t let the child into his house at all to look through the library or watch movies. All the while, he never did know the child’s name. But he did learn a lot about the kid, picking up on his interests and likes, especially when he fell asleep and took a nap, head propped on Gray’s lap in the shade. The boy loved dragons very much, never being much like the stories where knights would slay them to save the princess, but rather, the dragon and knight would work together to stop the evil witch. It was rather cute, if he had to think about it.

There were many times he would take part of the dream and store it away for use later on, but he left them untouched for the most part. Simply the dragons were taken while he conjured up a new one for the little boy’s dream to be complete and for the story to continue. He found himself smiling a lot and how warmed his heart was. It was a saddening thing to find out some things, such as how the little boy’s older brother seemed to disappear all of a sudden without a trace in search of something and never came back. Gray was never against deceiving others, but it was different this time - he felt bad lying, pretending to be someone he truly wasn’t. But… if it would make the boy happier, for the time being, he would bear with it until it would be alright to tell the truth one day. Kind of strange how their first names were the same, so at least, it wasn’t so bad, otherwise he would’ve been called a different name and given a completely different identity.

”Hey, Gray… I’m not going to die anytime soon, right?”

“Of course not. Death isn’t heading your way for a very long time.”

“But… the doctors said that I had a sickness and mommy was crying a lot when she heard about it.”

Gray blinked, taken aback about what to say. Terminal illness was what he should be able to pinpoint it to. The boy certainly seemed healthy in many instances and there wasn’t anything that pointed towards him being physically weak or anything, but… There were many things that didn’t show signs until it was far too late. This had to be one of them. It didn’t matter all too much to him, after all. Death wasn’t something he had ever found himself grieving over. People moved on, they shouldn’t linger on it for all that much. It was why he didn’t bother asking about his late mother. His father often told him time and time again that he shouldn't let his emotions govern him, and that was something he kept in his heart. Yet, for some reason, he found himself not wanting this little boy to die all that much. It was rather stupid, having such sentiments, especially when it would be hypocritical of him when he slaughtered people on a consistent basis at night when nobody knew, but it didn’t seem right. So softly, Gray assured the boy that he wouldn’t die anytime soon. The smile he received in turn was enough to bring his own.

He knew that befriending the kid would be a lot of trouble, however. How troublesome was the question.

One day, the little boy had decided to visit in the middle of the night while he and his father were away on a mission. His unsuspecting friend had decided to sneak into the house to try and search for him, only to be caught and detained by security, treated as a spy for the enemy faction that had taken Gray hostage all those years ago. Discovering him treated as not a child but an infiltrator, he couldn’t understand why his father found it fit to execute the little boy for something so trivial. As the unfair trial was beginning underway, he searched through one of his father’s studies, the one he was always told not to go into, and found information that he never wanted to see. He knew that the mafia had done bad things, but the length they were going to as described in the documents, the illegal workings and many other things that were considered far too inhumane to be allowed - kidnapping women and raping them for the fun of it, sexual harassment, torturing, the list went on. They were heading away from the more righteous path he tried to turn them towards. His father had stabbed the little boy - his friend -, and all he had to say for it was that it was necessary to protect the secrets of the faction. The image he had of his father immediately shattered like glass, and as the trial went on, he disobeyed his father severely, using his powers to scarcely save the little boy from his fate. For what did the little boy do to deserve the fate to be treated like a criminal? He was trustworthy and innocent, why couldn’t he be set free? His previous pleas were unheard and it was enforced that, so long as Gray obeyed them, that nobody would have to know about the incident - after all, it was a terminally ill child that nobody seemed to be paying attention to. His friend would have to lose everything…

”What had a mere child done? For what did he deserve this treatment?”

"It is a necessary sacrifice for the greater good, Gray. You do not have to forgive me for this."

"How could you?! Why? What had he done... why would you do this?!"

Lividly, he called upon the many dragons he had been collecting over time as an uncontrollable rage filled the entirety of his consciousness, everything passing by in a blur. The familiar feeling of bloodlust fell upon him as he drew his trusted guan dao, a twisted smile etched on his features as he approached the very humans he once felt were his kin and slaughtered as many of them as possible as he bowed down to his emotions, something that his father had always scolded him not to do; his father managed to escape, being the despicable man he was. The entire mansion was burned to the ground as he escaped, taking all of the data and wealth with it. And he fled with the little boy.

「 Ⅳ. L Y S I S 」

It was too late to find disguises at the time as the two of them ran into the city, stuck trying to keep out of the eyes of the police that were patrolling the entire grounds and everywhere with it, sirens blaring and turning about. For awhile, Gray considered using his gift again, sensing many resources around that could be enough of a distraction, but as he reached for one of his jars, a hand patted softly on it.

”No hurting them. They didn’t do anything wrong.”

That was enough to frustrate him a bit, but unfortunately, he found himself complying and trying to find a way out of the mess that he had dug himself into. While Sinclair still seemed to be in operations, seeing as the mafia wasn’t completely eliminated, there was the enemy faction as well that they had to be careful of not running into… Whether or not it was a blessing, he had bumped into a group of men and women in black, caught in their diversionary missions. Through the commotion, they found themselves hunted and mistaken for those people.

The police were in sight. Coming so close to having this thrill, not being completely restrained by everything, and coming so close to losing his friend, Gray couldn’t find it in himself to tell the people in black that he wasn’t their new member and that he was simply a rogue; with his silver tongue, he lied his way into it and thanks to the fortunate situation, he had been spared from a sticky fate. Despite hoping for a safer path, one that would be better for his friend, now that he was a runaway, there was no other way he could guarantee his safety…

This should be fine. It would work.

Later, he was introduced to Argona’s Force. While the idea of being around others with powers like his, especially those that took active participation in criminal activities hit too close to home, the offer was brought up.

”Kyeheh, we can figure out how to save your little friend from his ailment if you agree to work with us.”

His friend would be alive. It was an abrupt offer and it surprised him that the one he was speaking to seemed to be a step ahead of him and knew what was running through his mind-- no wait, that meant their power must have been mind reading. Gray didn’t trust her, but he took the deal. So long as his friend was safe, he would strike a deal with the devil if he had to.

”I never did catch your name.”

“Mine? Oh, uhm… I don’t have one.”

“You don’t? Hmm... May I call you Noël then?”

“Okay! I’m Noël!”

Gray smiled. Through all the deceiving and manipulation he had to do, all of the killing he had taken a part of and the destruction, and everything that he would have in the future to deal with, it would be alright for now. These little moments were enough for him. They were all the emotion he needed.

MEMOIR
「Ⅰ. N I R V A N A 」

There was a test subject, an experiment worked on for six years, created in such a manner to harness and produce high amounts of air at will. Unaware of its origin and purpose, it simply lived.

There was a small, scrawny green-haired boy covered in tattered and filthy brown rags, smelling of dirt, as though he hadn’t been cleaned for many months on end. His eyes were always dull and his responses were very limited, lips pulled back from teeth in a grimace or snarl, nostrils flared as if sensing danger as his pathetic amount of flesh clung onto his bones feebly in an attempt to give the poor excuse of a creature life. The way he shrank into himself, clutching his knees tightly against his chest made him even more petite and gaunt than he should’ve been, chains shackled around his neck, wrists, and ankles without being able to see the light of day or go into the outside world. He wasn’t sure how much time had passed by or how long he had been trapped within the rotting cell, but it didn’t really matter much. All he had to do was keep breathing, obeying the faceless people who wore white coats, and they would feed him the necessities for him to survive a bare minimum. It seemed that if he disagreed, they would beat him into submission anyway or forcefully spoon the meals down his throat. That was all his life consisted of - or the essence of it.

The smell of sulfur was very strong. He heard the word enough to understand that this had to be what the scent surrounding him was, and it came out of a bubbling monster that slumbered so lightly beneath his feet. He heard its roar of hunger and quakes with fear at the prospect that it may one day wake up and devour him whole, because that was the end of it, there was no escape. He didn’t know how many times he stayed awake, his wide green eyes refusing to blink in case, between one moment or the next, he is taken as its next meal. The heat choked him and made something inside his chest pound inexhaustibly too hard, trying to claim his consciousness. But he couldn’t sleep. He wasn’t allowed to. They would be coming to take him to another room away from the bars that kept him in soon. As if on cue, a masked soldier wearing armor and armed with some sort of sharp object came in, pulling him up and onto his feet forcibly, and kicked him out. They always did that, and a strange noise always came from their mouths, and he wasn’t sure what to call it. All he did was obey and do what he was told, following them as they lead him down the dark hallways to other rooms.

Many pairs of hands always held him down, others sending shocks down and throughout his body to trigger some sort of response that he couldn’t understand. There was always a striking sensation that burned inside his chest, as though putting his entire body aflame and he would writhe and bite down on his lips to prevent from screaming because the people with glasses always told him to be quiet and it had become so ingrained in him to listen to what they said. It did not hurt as much anymore, but every time, they seemed to change the strength of it to make it stronger and stronger, hoping to catch a reaction that he did not understand. A woman with green hair much like his own always oversaw the tasks, her mouth covered by a strange white thing that never came off. She was always the one speaking and conversing with the other people on things that his mind could not register or comprehend, something that didn’t make sense.

His body involuntarily shivered when they remove the poor excuse of fabric away from him, forcing his eyes to stay opened. They were doing something different that he couldn’t recall them doing before. All he could do was obey as they placed something on his head and strapped him down. The next moment, all ability to resist making sounds vanished and he was screaming and screaming and screaming until his voice simply breaks. He wanted to pass out, to have everything stop as he tried to flail or get out of the situation he was in, but they keep him pinned down and he can’t, he can’t-

”Stop squirming, AI. We’ll be done momentarily.”

The pain was so much worse than before, and the words they spoke flew past him with a complexity that he didn’t think he would ever be able to figure out, fingers stroking against his flesh, and they took notes as they carved into him, looked through whatever they could and trickled ice over his arms and fire over his knees and sound, some sort of sound endlessly ringing into his ears and he has no voice or ability to express how he felt and no escape and there was no safety.

Bit by bit, knick by knick, nerve by nerve, piece by piece, moving up his body in a detached, organized scientific way that he couldn’t even begin to comprehend beyond the fact that it hurt and he felt hurt and something salty was rolling down his cheeks - what he had done and why they were doing this, he couldn’t figure out because he had been prevented from ever learning - and they never stopped. They continued to give that same strange noise like the soldier did before, in its toxicity and cruelty, his restraints tightening more and more. They determined his fate every second, every minute, every hour, every day, and make him feel something inside from agony ripping into every seam and tearing him apart until he was nothing more than a limp body that they had to reassemble, bit and bit and bit and flies buzzing around and eating at festering wounds and he was nothing but this empty existence. All they kept doing was shaking his shoulders - he must be conscious, always conscious - and when they open his mouth and pour something that was slimy and makes him gag and nearly throw up it back up, he tried to break free again but they hold him back down even more, the straps tightening until they sliced into his flesh with red and he heard orders and barks and he tried and tried as his body lights itself up like a flame burning too brightly.

He didn’t belong here, he didn’t belong anywhere, he was nothing. His face was always expressionless and he was always screaming himself hoarse at the onslaught, throwing his head back helplessly in anguish. The waves kept coming as he trembled violently, and then…

… They… stopped?

Only half-alive and drugged, he could only hear about his fate from the guards stationed outside of his cell. He was going to die. He was going to die. He was going to die. He didn’t know what that meant, but he didn’t want that.

He didn’t want to die.

「 Ⅱ. D Y S T O P I A 」

A line of more unknown strangers were leading him somewhere again. Instead of the usual way they turned to go to the room that taught him how to ignore pain, he was being led down a different hallway. While he had trouble getting up, his body wracked with coughs and forced to stand upright with shocks of electricity coursing through all of his veins, sending a sensation that he could only assume was prickly into it as the item was stabbed into his sides again and again to keep him conscious. Everything burned and sometimes, he thought that it would be better to simply crumple onto the ground and curl up and hopefully fade away from existence, but that never happened. They always dragged him back onto his feet and let him continue walking.

Eventually, the guard’s footsteps had halted, and slowly, the little boy lifted his face to look up at why, blinking halfheartedly as black smeared into his vision, blurring the edges of it as everything seemed to be looked at more than once, like a double image or mirror to see into. But he recognized the figure, the one being the woman from before with green hair like his.

The one who was giving him all of this pain.

Her lips were turned up in a strange curve that seemed to brighten her features, one of those brown boards with white sheets on them held between her hands - the ones that they used to write down notes -, but something about it made chills run down his spine. The way she looked at him with an upturned mouth, running her fingers down his arm and caressing his unkempt strands of hair. Slowly, she offered her hand to him and he only blinked in response, unsure of what to make of it but to flinch back further. These people were bad… They weren’t nice. He didn’t want to go with them yet. Whatever that was before, they didn’t let him make a decision, grabbing his wrist forcibly and into the chambers. It was a new one, one that he didn’t understand the purpose of. It was very small and cramped with only one small window that let people from outside see. A single chair was inside, black in color, and they strapped him down to it like they always did. The woman from before closed the door and the resounding click! told him he was locked inside.

Smog and gas filled the chambers, his lungs filling up and choking through it as everything began to scar itself, wanting to burst into small bits and pieces. His skin was beginning to be filled with strange bumps that he couldn’t make out, his eyes searing as he found himself unable to keep them shut. Instantly, it felt as though thousands of needles were impaling into his skin, as everything about him began to rip away one by one, worse than the pain from before as it penetrated his very being and surged through each of his limbs. Trying to thrash about and hope that he could break free was proving to be futile as his consciousness began to slip away, and suddenly, he felt something that he never felt before. Panic. Was that the right word? He wasn’t sure, but it didn’t matter. He wanted to live. To break free. They tossed him in here like trash to die. He didn’t want to die yet. Not yet. Not yet. Not yet. He couldn’t feel anything anymore. He couldn’t think or breathe or move or escape.

Something whirled from his fingers that were struggling to move and wiggle around, blasting everything away in a blind fury with columns of wind and air. The gales battered into the atmosphere, dispelling the poison in their song and dance. It didn’t stop there. Soon, they managed to free him from where he was, breaking the restraints that he thought weren’t possible to break and obliterated the chambers keeping him sheltered inside. He could stand on his own, and suddenly, he found himself feeling something akin to freedom, a terrifying, wonderful one at that, and light burst through the windows as glass shattered with the force of a hurricane. The shockwaves pushed the white coated people back, and suddenly, there were screams raised from different voices that weren’t his own. His body bent and flowed like a tree caught in a breeze, flowing and ebbing with every movement. Each kick and strike was backed up by the air, surrounding his body in a small maelstrom that intensified with every heartbeat. The carnage around him, the stench of death and bodies, and in the center of it all was a little boy, flying like a ghostly apparition and tearing them apart. The winds slowly started to die down, and the next person’s body fell down with a sickening plop! at his feet.

He stumbled forward once more, collapsing as his body tensed and went still. He was too tired to care about the footsteps approaching him or to register the slow applause coming closer and closer.

”Finally, you show some potential.”

When he woke up, he found himself completely alone. None of the blood or anything was around, and the entire room was clean. He also found himself void of the injuries he had before, slightly bandaged up here and there. His eyes peered around, and he it only made it clear that nobody else was around. For a while, he simply walked through the maze-like facility, not able to find any of the people he used to be around there with him. Most of it seemed to be destroyed and completely wrecked. He managed to make difficult jumps with ease for a child, and suddenly, he found himself face to face with the woman once again. The one in charge of everything. She questioned whether or not if he was hurt, complimented his skills, but he didn’t manage to respond or comprehend what she was actually saying. She made that strange noise that the other people used to make, but it didn’t sound as bad as they had, something about it seeming more gentle and soft. What was he supposed to call her?

”I am your mother, AI. The one who brought you to life.”

“Mother…”

“That’s right.”

She looked over him and took care of any injuries that he may have sustained then. All he could respond was the same small phrase over and over again - ‘hurt’. She gave him a name, something that he never knew he had, and chidingly told him that he wouldn’t be hurt anymore. Something about giving him something to wear when they walked out, and she kept questioning whether or not he wanted to go with her. She said she wouldn’t hurt him again. He wasn’t sure whether that was true or not… It didn’t seem like she had any ill intentions thus far. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad? Even though she gave the orders, she never was the one to hurt him and she always made them stop when it got very very bad. And she came back for him now. She never hurt him. She never did. She was saving him. It would be okay.

”...Go.”

“Good. But right now, you are worthless to me. You must be stronger both physically and mentally.”

He wanted to look back at the facility one last time, but eventually gave up. All of it would really disappear soon, and all he could do was blink, confused as something inside him tried to stir and failed to.

"From now on, your name is Callum."

Under his mother’s wing, she took care of him in a secluded building far away from civilization, and started training him in combat, with the hopes of making him a useful tool in the future. Callum didn’t necessarily dislike the training (nor everything that his mother had done for him so far), but he didn’t see the point of it. He was born to die after all, and he had been tossed away to die in the first place, so what was the purpose of learning self-defense? His mother taught him and beat him whenever he didn’t listen, or went through other extremities to punish him. She told him that he had freedom, something that many other people didn’t have because they had to abide to the laws of the world, but instead, he had the power over air, the element of liberty in all of its glory. He could make use of it, so long as he listened to her. How everyone else in the world was simply a puppet on the strings of the government leaders but because he wasn’t considered someone who existed, he didn’t have to listen to all of that.

Freedom. It seemed like such a foreign and abstract concept. He couldn't understand any of the jargon she was saying, only blinking in response ever so often. Sunlight was piercing through the headset he had been given to hide his eyes - for what, he wasn’t sure -, and how, though he may have been under restrictions, he would be more free than anyone else would ever be. He didn't know that his mother wanted to use him however she pleased. Her response was simply that she was putting his potential to practice, and that if he didn’t like it, she could ask for another gas chamber to be made to kill him. For a few moments, he debated taking that option.

”Let me... Die.”

It wasn't the answer she was looking for.

That was the first time he had enraged his mother and she had beaten him senseless, being more severe than usual, yelling at him over and over again that he would not be allowed to die until she no longer saw any value in him. How she would always come to pick him up even if he threw himself down into the depths of hell. How he would be rotting away in a dirty existence if it weren’t for her, because nobody else cared about him except for her. He didn’t have any other purpose anyway. At least, like this, he could put himself into some use instead of laying around like the trash he really was. Many times afterwards, she would beat him over and over again.

There was the searing pain from when she carved the patterns into his body to make sure that the control was never lost. Over and over again, it was almost the same as the facility, but much worse now, all under the command of the single person responsible for it all. Those glyphs, those designs, he didn’t know how to get rid of them, nor did he care enough to find out. There was no point.

He didn’t belong anywhere, he didn’t belong where he was now, he was a complete nobody. It was an accident when the blades of the scissors pierced his skin for the first time.

He tried to kill himself multiple times over by the time he was nine. Hanging, drowning, suffocating, whatever he could possibly think of or get his hands on. Each time, his mother saved him and beat him unconscious. There were times where she would knock him to the point where he thought he was dead already, only to wake up days later with no success. There were other times where she would beat him up and toss words of vehement disgust just for the fun of it. He was her marionette, her puppet, her plaything. She did whatever she wanted to him, and so he listened without refusing. He couldn’t fight back anyway. Her control wasn’t just over his body - it was over his mind and entire being as well. Fighting back was never possible. And it never would be.

His mother told him that it was because he wasn't good enough, that he didn't deserve that sort of treatment, only because he was a worthless piece of trash who was meant to be thrown away from the very start. Everyone in the world wanted him to die and disappear already - she was giving him a purpose and value to prove them wrong, to exact his revenge...

... What revenge? He knew what the word meant, but he had no desire for it in his blank, empty self.

Back in his prison cell, he felt something in his chest stir in a maelstrom, tightening and make it difficult to breath. He ignored it. He couldn't understand any of it. His thoughts couldn't piece together the puzzle or get him out of the maze he pulled himself into.

He was just alive, completely excluded from the circle that everyone called the world. No one truly needed him, even if they claimed they did. He had no place to call his own. He had no value as an individual. Callum couldn’t understand any of them. Not his mother, he brought him into this existence. Not the scientists who had played with him and experimented with him. Not his brother, who didn’t know that he truly existed. He didn't understand his existence, his very being, the disposable creature that he was.

”Let... me... die.”

He remembered the strange noise those scientists making.

… A laugh. That’s what it was called. It sounded empty and hollow.

A person laughed when they were having fun or when they were enjoying themselves over something - that was what the dictionary he consulted with said.

He was never happy. What was that supposed to mean? What did it mean to be sad, angry, or happy?

Emotions… He didn’t know what they were.

「 Ⅲ. F R A G M E N T A T I O N 」

There were very few times he was allowed outside on his own. All of the time, he was shackled to chains inside that little room in the middle of nowhere that nobody wanted to go into. Callum found himself unable to conjure those powers over the wind like he did back in the facility to break free, but he saw no point in that. Nobody wanted him and the only thing he was decent at being was a pawn for his mother to use. But the guard outside was different. They always seemed to have a sort of strange glow or forcefield around them. The logical explanation was that they had some sort of superpower too, possibly to negate others’ powers. He didn’t care all that much. There was no incentive to escape. He already accepted that he had to obey and submit to everything. When he was able to leave the hellhole of a prison it was, where he was fed enough to maintain a healthy appearance, it was for training purposes. To be pitted against other people, to kill them, and become more powerful in battle as he kept going. Over and over again. Sometimes, it was one person who was much bigger and stronger than him. Other times, it was multiple people at once. Either way, he managed to prevail under the close instruction of his mother and many others. They trained him, but never gave him a weapon. Said he didn't need one, and he didn't question it.

His mother was the puppeteer and he the marionette. She was always sitting comfortably at home, barking commands and orders whenever possible while he acted on them. Too prim and proper, not fit for a lady, to get her hands dirty she said. He didn't understand what she meant by that.

Two years later, he was admitted as a full member of Argona’s Force, the agency that his mother was subordinate to.

”Let’s hope you prove to be an asset to us.”

Callum never bothered questioning what their objectives was or what they were planning to do - simply going along with it. Those who doubted the abilities of a little boy like him had it coming when he held large killing sprees during missions and was one of the most successful at gathering information from listening into the wind and sensing everything. He would spend much of his time under orders, whenever he was not locked up, doing research and looking up old mission logs, learning how they worked, and how everything should be operated. A formidable unit, they always called him, but they never bothered to praise him or compliment him or give him much attention.

It didn't matter.

None of it did. One day, he would get killed during a mission or the Force would fall apart - that was how the line of work went. Sacred powers or not, his skills weren’t considered natural because his mother was the one playing the strings behind it, regardless of whether or not he trained or honed himself. None of it really belonged to him. But being one of the child soldiers, they found him very fitting to do a job that few could. Go into a school and ‘befriend’ one of the children in the Tempo family.

Looking up various sources, Callum found that the house of Tempo was filled with those gifted with the powers over time. Rather fitting, considering their last name. He accepted the mission without question. For once, he actually attended a normal school like a normal child should, but he didn't see the point in education. He already knew all of the information he taught. Walking around hallways only made him notice how everyone was bunched up together and always having fun, laughing, smiles on their faces… A wide variety of expressions and emotions that they could all display. He didn’t know how they could change their features to look like that. Pulling his scarf over to cover his mouth, he remained expressionless the entire time.

The targets were pretty much glued together - he didn’t recall ever seeing one without the other. A genius prodigy brother, the other an overconfident boisterous girl who didn’t seem to realize her limits. Kearn was always around other people, no matter what, so Adeline was a much easier target. She latched onto him way too easily, all because he used the word ‘friend’ around her. She wasn’t his friend. She would never be. He didn't even know what the word meant. Callum found out about many of her various problems, including her undying jealousy, and simply listened in whenever she would rant about it, turning off his hearing and letting the words fly over his head. He mocked her whenever he was ordered to, to fuel a fire and get her to do something that his mother wanted her to. It worked without a hitch.

Adeline trusted him enough that he managed to betray her and get the mission over with in a flash. He didn’t understand any of it, but had done everything under orders.

Once the incident went on the news, he finally managed to leave the school.

Nobody remembered his existence.

Things with Adeline’s family got rocky, apparently. Her mother and brother were in America, and she was still in France with her drunk and overdramatic father. Callum was told to get her to leave her father as soon as possible, and he did what he was asked. It was much easier than he expected. He managed to avoid contact with his brother as much as he could because his mother told him to, the one that didn’t seem to know he existed still.

She left to the United States without any problems and there were no questions.

Perchance, there was an opportunity to kill himself. And he took it.

「 Ⅳ. O B L I V I O N 」

Only mere months later, he woke up from the coma once again, wrapped in bandages in a prison bed and cell. Of course he wouldn’t be able to get away that easily. He didn't know what he had been doing. He wasn't sure... he just knew that it wasn't warranted, so he went back to what he had to do. The same routine kept continuing over and over again. Catatonia, working under Argona’s Force, killing, information-gathering, the same onslaught no matter what. His mother wasn’t going to let him win. He was always stuck like this until she wanted him to die. She wouldn’t tell him when that was, but it didn't matter to him anymore.

To find out that his mother had gotten someone from the Force to alter the memories of the Tempo twins and his younger brother so that he had been playing a more significant role in their lives, and they knew him as a nicer person, someone who was optimistic and cheerful and so vibrant and lively and supportive… The fragments of his true identity were shattered. Nobody knew the real him. They would only see him as a sweet boy who was always trying to make them happy.

Their ‘best friend’. A ‘true’ older brother.

Why did his chest hurt...?

... Oh well. He dismissed it as something necessary, something like any order he was told to follow. It wasn’t anything new. It would never be anything new. Nothing about his situation would change. His life was always controlled by someone else - it was only a matter of time that everything about him would be modified for the sake of playing a pawn. None of it mattered because everything he did was because someone asked him to. This was not anything different. He couldn't think for himself.

For another four years, he endured it. Being locked up and acting the part of a puppet, never having control over his own body or mind, submitting at every moment or command he was given like an overly loyal dog, getting knocked unconscious and reverting to a catatonic state - the last time he could remember it happening, his mother had beaten him right after awakening from a severe accident during a mission that caused him to become paraplegic and require a wheelchair temporarily outside when she was holding him up by the strings attached to her fingers -, learning how to make himself more useful through combative training and mastering his powers however he could… Some saw it fit that he went to attend Sofia. If that’s what the Force wanted him to do, then he would. He learned to walk without being able to feel his legs some time later.

The mask of indifference only grew more solid and sturdier over time. More limited responses when necessary, his movements becoming more robotic as if he weren’t human. Control over his gift was exceptional for his age, surpassing even those who were supposed to be even more experienced than him. Callum found himself skipping classes over and over again for missions on orders, only attending for midterms and finals, but it seemed that nobody noticed his absences enough or perhaps they had stopped bothering with it since he would not actually go to the lessons on a daily basis - a school for the exceptional, only the most worthy. He didn’t belong there. A life without meaning or true existence was not worthy of anything. His mother sent him on many missions over, and eventually, he found that Flynn and his step-father had moved to the United States as well, same place as the Tempos. Said father died along the way in a back alley, and he held no sentiments over the death. He never knew him anyway. He was just another person in the world, one where his younger brother would wail and grieve over for ages without end.

At least, his step-father was that much. Callum wasn’t a person; he was a creature, a being, a toy entirely insignificant to the rest of the world, the very world that told him he didn't belong there. He wouldn't ever be shown that same compassion. There was no way he could prove his worth - he had none.

Nobody knew the ‘real’ him. They never would. His mother wouldn't let them.

One of his victims had cried out, asking him to spare them, to show that he was a compassionate human, that he was just like the others too. That every human was equal and the same in the fact that they all had hopes and dreams for the future, a purpose to fulfill. Behind the visor that covered his eyes, the same eyes that remained as blank as possible, unwavering or showing any sympathy.

”Not... human...”
