It was nearing Christmas. It was a winter wonderland outside. Lights draped across buildings, cheery folks whistling Christmas songs, getting them stuck in your head for days after you hear them. Rosy cheeks and bright eyes, a magical time.
Or, it would be, if the close proximity to Christmas didn't mean one thing- finals. If you were in Winter you'd have nothing to worry about, strolling around the school without a care in the world, appreciating the season that happened to be your namesake. However, if you were in Summer, then you'd be fretting over the multiple exams and working your ass off studying.
Then again, that may have just been Emelia. For the rest of the semester she had just been floating by with Cs and perhaps a B or two, (in the classes she actually understood, and didn't feel like they were speaking some other language.) and now it became apparent to her that as a large portion of her grade, she'd actually have to do well on her finals to pass. Whenever she arrived at Beata, she figured she'd just get to hang out with cool superhero kids, and maybe pretend to work on her power every once in a while. Paying attention in class didn't seem that important to her, not when there were so many parties to attend to, bad guys to fight, and friends to make. So now, when Em actually had to study and pass so her parents didn't drag her out of this school and throw her into some hospital to spend the remainder of her dying months, she realized that maybe this place wasn't so fun after all. Ugh.

So there Em sat. She was draped across one of the large couches in the lounge, paperwork scattered around her. (After all, she was never known to be a neat person.) A textbook sat in her lap, her face inches from it with a frown deepset on her face as she read the words on the thin paper. God, it was like reading another language for her. Right then, any distraction to save her from this torture would be a God sent blessing.

While about three-fourths of the school were reluctantly focused on the end of the year exams, there was a certain Winter walking down the hall who had completely different things on his mind. It was Christmas, after all. It'd never really been his favorite holiday, exactly. Being an foster child most his life and all, he never spend the holidays with the same family twice, and he'd always felt awkward and out of place. He could never give out any presents either, could never afford it really, and everything given to him were always generic or completely void of magic; toy cars, footballs, or socks - nothing that he really found worth hanging on too.

But this year was kinda different, wasn't it? Certainly, Ethan wasn't that big in the friend department, but he did have roommates... There was ... Colette? (He thought her name was), and Evelyn - even if he didn't see her much, or remember her face... And of course, Kimberly as well. He supposed it would be the "good" thing to get them all something, but his dear, pink-haired friend was whom he was by far the most concerned about.

...
But what could he get her?
...
He really wasn't good at these kinds of things.

And so he walked into the lounge, ready to finish up his ritual studying for the reason, large books in his arms. He'd been so lost in thought, in fact, that he didn't notice at all the giant candy cane that someone left on the floor; and he tripped. Thankfully, he didn't fall to the ground, but the pile of books in his hands hadn't been so lucky. "Oh..." He sighed, pushing his glasses up his nose. "Of course." He slowly, carefully bent down to pick it all up, hoping no one noticed.

Okay, seriously? This is math, this equation looks like a freaking sentence to me, what the fu- Emelia's head jerked up when she heard the books crash to the ground, and she jumped slightly. She had been so deep in thought that she hadn't noticed the stranger walk in, and she blushed at her reaction. "Ah here, let me help you with that."Quickly setting her book to the side, she slide off the couch and crouched down to help the boy gather his books. Once she realized what they were, she laughed lightly. "I see I'm not the only one planning on studying right now." She looked up and noticed his Winter colors and grinned. "Though I bet you're having much better luck than I am at it." She said, handing him the books that she had gathered.

Ethan almost sighed again when he realized that there had indeed there to notice his total trip up. "Its alright, I've got it -" He tried to say before realizing that most everything he dropped was already pulled together back into a pile for him. "Erm... yeah, thanks." He did his best to sound appreciative with a weak smile. Saying nothing for a few moments, he took the books back and made way around the couch, setting his pile down near the girl's things. "More reviewing than real studying." He admitted. The boy had a year's worth of work to make up, but the teachers wouldn't let him work over break, so studying for the finals was the only productive thing he could do.
"Luck has nothing to do with it," His smile grew a little, his proud Winter side showing. "What about you? How is your studying coming?"
