She sat alone at the edge of the couch, twisting a bottle in her hand. A slim black cane rested against the arm of the sofa, within easy reach, something her friends in the infirmary had gotten their hands on for her. Lights, drinks, music, and the other stuff too. Just a little get-together among... friends. Jane tapped her finger against the neck of the bottle, ring clinking against the glass, following the beat.

Clink. Clink. Clink.

Dorm 406 rattled. Her ears could've bled. Too much bass. She just stared out across the room as the people filtered in, one eye fixed on empty space, lost in her own head.

Clink. Clink. Clink.

This whole stunt had put her in some serious debt, but she deserved to treat herself, didn't she? Didn't she? She'd grown up spoiled, no one could blame her. Her smile twitched.

Clink. Clink. CLINK.

Jane throttled the bottle and brought it up to her lips. Bottoms up.

The bass of the beat sent shudders through the walls, it was hard for Jules to shut it out even from under three layers of blankets. She hated this, she hated Jane for doing this right now but also she couldn't complain. She was in disarray, barely able to be mentally coherent to hold a conversation without getting lost in something fucking stupid that caught her attention in the distance. She was a shell of herself, no amount of weight gain and scrubbing up could erase the marks that covered her. Her hair was luckily back to it's normal length, well, more a little longer than it's normal shoulder length. It gave her a small sense of normalcy when she passed by a mirror (there were none in her room or her bathroom), but every now and then the brush of hair against her skin spooked her and she chopped away at it.

Six months it had been since she'd come back, but still she didn't attend class. No one blamed her. No one questioned it when she was found impaled on a fence from jumping off a rooftop near the entrance. No one questioned anything she did anymore.

It was like everyone was afraid to speak to her.

They were right to be, but why did that fucking sting?

If it wasn't enough that she was a wreck, that she's lost her brother and gained a nightmare, she's lost the peace she'd found at Beata. Turn back the clock, she thought about begging Lamia or Kyou or someone. But the memories would linger with her, and erasing her memories wouldn't be possible, too dangerous while men like Kaleb were living.

Fuck it, they couldn't take everything from her.

Tearing the sweat-stuck sheets from her limbs, Jules stormed over to the bathroom, turning on the faucet without care, it wasn't like temperatures mattered when her pain receptors were gone. She didn't bother dolling herself up after cleaning up, choosing to let them see that she wasn't magically fixed after being depressed and curled up in her room.

She dressed in artfully torn jeans, a graphic tee that screamed something in gibberish chinese-english hybrid. It didn't make her look put together, but she didn't care about that either. It suited her.

Her head was pressed against the door before she dared to open it. She breathed deeply in, asking her heart to still before finally clenching the doorknob to twist it open. 'I can do this. It's just a few people, I know these people.'

There were too many people, but she pushed through it. When she spotted Jane, she latched onto her friend as a lifeline. 'You did this, you deal with it,' she thought as she plopped herself down next to Jane and cracking a mixer bottle open on the table's edge before shotgunning it in one.

"Everything you imagined it to be?"
She couldn't quite keep out the annoyance out of her voice. "Got anything stronger? I'm going to need it."

She looked like shit. That was her first thought, catching her out the corner of her good eye as she slipped out of her room, but she didn't bother to look at her until the bottle was empty. Jane tossed it haphazardly to the side, letting it bounce away across the carpet between people's feet. Whatever. The dorm was going to be trashed anyways. Hopefully. Was it a real party if they didn't turn the place upside down? Nothing in 406 felt the way it should've been, not the way it was before.

When and how and why did it all change?

Jane picked up on the trace of irritation, but couldn't work up enough enthusiasm to get annoyed back in turn. She'd figured the others wouldn't have cared much for her little get-together, but she'd thrown up the invitation and thrown all her money into it anyways. If Jules wanted to hole up and never deal with civilization again, she just had to go outside and wander into the woods. Jane wanted this, and this was where she wanted it.

Call her insensitive, but she'd never been one to tiptoe around other people's problems.

All she knew was that she'd dropped off the face of the earth and the next time she saw her she might as well have been a different person. Jane hadn't bothered to nose into it more than that. If she was being honest, she didn't want to know. They could banter like this like old times all they wanted, but something had been lost, and it wouldn't be easy to reverse it back to the way it was.

It was just different.

"How strong are we talking?" she asked. "If you want it, I probably have it."
