Personality Summary:

Isaac is quiet, mostly because he's shy and has been avoided all his life. He really doesn't care about much except his gaming, his reading, and getting enough sleep to play game tournaments or read entire series' straight through. When he's around people he doesn't normally say anything or keeps his sentences short because he doesn't think there's anything worth saying. Generally Isaac doesn't give a single crap about anyone or anything other than himself and what he likes because all his life that was how others acted toward him. That's also partly why he's so quiet around others because they're not worth his words.

He's a smart kid, but he's slow to understand and often has to go through things multiple times before he gets it. He only thinks quickly when it's a game and he needs to win really badly. Isaac is also very, very sensitive. On the outside he may look hard and cold, but inside he's afraid. Afraid of losing, afraid of being alone, afraid of loud noises, afraid of everything. Around others he's very good at putting on a face, but on his own he could easily break down. Despite being as indifferent as he is, Isaac is by far a very, very passionate person. When he finds something he enjoys doing, he won't stop. That's why reading and gaming are so very important to him, because he likes them and he puts his all into them.

If he were to find something else that he enjoyed, or even someone else, he would treat it with the same passionate desire to know more. Also, despite being both slow and indifferent, Isaac understands a lot. He knows what people go through because he was able to watch it all from the sidelines, both sides of things. Isaac would make a great counselor if he wasn't so keen on not talking to anyone. And at the end of it all, Isaac is loving. History Summary:

Isaac was born to Dunstan and Carey Eckly on a beautiful January morning. Granted it was midnight and Carey was tired as crap, the small family happily welcomed its newest member with exhausted, open arms. They welcomed Isaac home soon after that and thus began the raising of a hallucination powered boy. Carey was the non-gifted person in the family and she knew Dunstan had the ability to generate gases just by thinking about it. He had practiced and trained to keep it low but he did enjoy lighting fires with his flammable gases and giving his young boy a show. Because of this, the couple knew their boy was going to be gifted as well, and it wouldn't take long for something to manifest.

The first thing Carey noticed was that Isaac's diaper never smelled all that bad. There was always an undertone of poop but really, it smelled good and made her think of home when she was growing up. Sometimes she imagined the day her and Dunstan first met. On days when Dunstan changed his diaper, Isaac smelled like a baby with a smelly diaper. But that didn't mean Dunstan didn't believe his wife. Their child had a gift, and if had to have something to do with smells or gases. It had manifested very early due to his constant joy and happiness. Throughout the years they worked to try and figure out what it was.

Real signs began showing up with Isaac turned five and began to attend school. All the kids in his class loved him and he made friends quickly. Because he was happy all the time, Isaac's gift manifested itself more and more every day. The smells were faint, but enough to give the kids illusions of the happiest days of their lives. Every day everyone would hang out with Isaac and recall their favorite things. It didn't last very long and when they were done they would play games and make new memories to relive when the smells came back. This lasted until third grade when parents began to hear the stories that their kids told for what they were. They weren't just things they made up with with their great imaginations, odd things really did happen when Isaac Eckley was around. And they didn't stop at being worried. They voiced their concerns to the school before the Eckley's.

Insulted and worried, the Eckley's moved out of the area to San Francisco, a big change for the small town family. But Isaac took to it easily, he figured he'd be able to make friends like he had back home. But this wasn't the case. Kids were instantly smelling things around him and reliving happy memories. The scents were faint and lasted very little time and the hallucinations were more like memories coming back than actual generated images, but it was enough to worry the parents of the kids Isaac was around. They made the same connection the parents in Cotati made and complained again. But this time the Eckley's didn't move immediately. Dunstan and Carey were still getting used to the big city and wanted to see if Isaac could get used to it as well. When Isaac was worried, he didn't often smell at all, so if he was able to learn to control his emotions, he could control his gift.

This was a very bad idea. Isaac was bullied because of the hate he was receiving from parents. The kids would confront him, tell him how their parents said he was a danger and a bother. That there was something weird wrong with him and he needed to stop what he was doing. The automatic result? Fear and anger. Frustration triggered bad smells and the other half of his gift that generated the children's worst nightmares. They would cry and sob when Isaac felt the most threatened and would tell teachers and parents. Parents complained to the Eckley's that Isaac was causing trouble and that he needed to be dealt with. He had been raised improperly, they would say, taught to tease and torment other children.

Once again the Eckley's were insulted, but this time more confused. What had happened to their happy Isaac? Whenever they were around him they felt fear and sadness and thought of pain from their past. They didn't want their son to feel hurt or left out, so Dunstan got a transfer and they moved to Japan. Because it was such a big leap, Isaac was allowed to take a few months off of school and start the next school year. His mom sat down with him and taught him some things that he would need to know and explained the gifted thing about his father. Isaac began to understand that he wasn't normal and felt even more worried and upset. How was he supposed to get along with the other kids if he couldn't go near them without causing worry?

Carey thought the same thing. So during their small tutoring sessions where Isaac learned Japanese, math, English, and other subjects he would need to be caught up on for school, Carey and Isaac worked on figuring out how his gift worked. Their first step was to discover where it came from. Dunstan had said when he was younger his came from his fingers tips. Isaac and Dunstan's gifts had started by coming from every pore in the body to a concentrated area. Giving Isaac some mac 'n' cheese with tuna, Carey investigated by sniffing her son. They started from the top down, occasionally pausing so Isaac could do some sniffing in locations his mother couldn't go, but found nothing. Isaac sighed, frustrated and angry. Instantly Carey felt sorrow for a lost something and then the memory faded and she snapped back, excited and enlightened. His scents came from his mouth! Their solution? Tell the class he had an illness that was being cured and have him wear a mask at all times.

This worked enough to, not only keep the scents in, but keep kids away from Isaac. Along the way they learned that, when blocked, scents came from his finger tips, toes, ears, and nose. Luckily the mask covered his nose, he could wear gloves on his hands, and he always had his shoes on. But the ears were the hardest part. It was rude and impolite to wear earbuds during classes. Dunstan came up with the solution to this problem and explained to the teacher that Isaac had very sensitive hearing and needed to plug his ears all the time to keep from going deaf. The teacher agreed that, as long as they weren't electronic ear plugs, he could wear them in class. Of course, Isaac didn't have sensitive hearing and he had to learn to hear through his ear plugs clearly, but by the time he was fourteen it was not a problem.

Isaac lived in Japan for a couple of years after perfecting how to contain his gift when Beata became an option for the family. Dunstan and Carey remained in Japan and sent Isaac off to live at Beata to work on properly controlling his gift. This third move made him more of a shut in than ever.

Personality Summary:

Danny is an overly friendly person, looking on the outside so he can avoid looking inside. He doesn't enjoy what he is and prefers to look at others to light up his world. He's a puppy dog abused by its owner, flinching at even the slightest sign of possible violence; a friend lifting a hand to say hi, someone clenching a fist, another person licking their lips. Dan doesn't accept himself for who he is and so spends time around other people to make himself feel safe and accepted. He's often rather out of focus, stopping to think if he has even a moment of silence to himself. His puppydog-like mannerisms make him appear younger than he is, almost child-like.

Debra Madden was very weak in the heart and the effort of child birth was too much for her frail body. Giving birth to Danny caused her heart to fail and her soul to leave this world. This broke Lucas to pieces. He and Debra had been together since middle school, they'd known each other for years and they had known they would be together forever. The idea that she left the world before him ached and he longed to join her, to be with her. But her dying wish had been for him to care for Daniel. The baby was small, not frail like his mother, but fragile enough to break. At first Lucas skirted around his son, tempted to join Debra and leave the boy in the care of someone who knew what they were doing. But as Daniel grew older, Lucas realized why he wanted to stay with the boy. He blamed Dan for the death of his mother, for the death of Lucas' wife. Lucas began harboring hatred toward the small boy and, within a matter of years, hit him.

It was a shock, when it first happened. Daniel was used to being slapped or flicked when he did something he should have known better than to do, but one day, out of nowhere and without prior cause, Lucas hit his son. It felt oddly good. And that was how it started. Lucas was the kidnapper and Daniel the kidnapped. The fact that they were blood related made this nothing, no one could touch Lucas as long as they couldn't get proof. Danny started school afraid of other people, but the kids were so friendly he found solace in the school he attended. Whenever he returned home his father worried and fretted over the boy before demanding to hear that school was awful, that home life was better, that Danny loved his father.

And as the years drew by, Dan began to believe it himself. The only one who truly cared for him was his dad. His friends were nice, but they weren't as amazing as the loving father that put a roof over his head and food in his stomach. Whenever his friends asked him over to their houses he always had an excuse; my dad wanted helping gardening, my dad wanted help making dinner, dad wanted to go see a movie. Most of the time it wasn't true, but all of the time it was out of fear. That his father would stop loving him if he didn't come home immediately. That his father would leave him if there was any sign that he didn't love him the most. A small part of Danny did fear the hitting and the punching, and occasionally the knife and the cigarettes. But there was no fighting. The pain was a part of how Lucas showed his love, by hurting him, making him ache inside and out.

The first manifestation of his gift was when he was starting middle school. It was the summer before his sixth grade year started and, on a warm, starry night, sleeping outside under the stars, Danny dreamed. He had known what dreaming was before, but this was different. It was magical and beautiful. Every time he thought something, it happened. When he woke up he figured he had been crazy. Some peopled had control over their dreams, it was a natural talent or a focused skill. But after long internet hours Daniel learned how to truly control his dreams and prove he was the one doing it. He flicked the lights in and off, pinched himself and felt pain. Poked the very real bruise from his father on his left hip. It all felt and looked so real, so he knew it had to be.

One night, only a few months later, Dan slept in his fathers bed, fearing the noises coming from somewhere outside. There was shouting, yelling, occasional thumping, and some loud clicks that sounded like a lighter being lit next to his ear. Their warm bodies spooned next to each other and they fell asleep like this, Daniel's smaller hands in his father's larger ones. When he opened his eyes he wasn't anywhere familiar. The room was odd and new. Dan instantly spotted his father, sitting alone, nothing else around. When he approached his dad was, at first, thrilled to see his son. They were dreaming the same dream, but neither was aware of it. Until Lucas came in for a hug and Dan's subconscious defended him from harm by putting up a literal wall. Danny was confused, he had wanted a hug from his dad. Lucas was confused, his son seemed afraid of him.

Thus it went. Occasionally Dan would touch his sleeping father on the arm and go into his dreams, playing with them to see what this odd gift was. Sometimes he dreamed his own dreams, in full control of them. He learned he could do what he wanted with them, and he often turned his dreams against him, giving him nightmares and frights and pain that felt very real but was never there when he woke up. This became routine. Go to school, come home, spend time with his dad, sleep and spend time in his dreams.

Suddenly, and without warning, there came a new school, and a new option. Beata rose like a great, intimidating stone wall before the small family and, oddly, Lucas liked it. His son was gifted, more special. It made him resent him more. To torture Daniel further he insisted he attend Beata, being away from him would create an ache in the boys heart and he knew it. Not getting the pain of his love would create a longing that would allow Daniel's home visits to be more fun than when he lived there all the time. So Lucas sent Daniel off to Beata, with only the request that he visit on the holidays.
