It's Time to Begin [open]

A small blue haired girl stared out of the window of a car. Watching the fall scenery pass by in a blur of orange, yellow and brown. Any one from where she was from would be in awe of how many trees there were in the north. Sure they could go to Flagstaff and they even had their own fair share of trees in Sedona, but there were an endless amount up in the northern United States. Rebecca couldn't even begin to imagine what it would look like in the summer with all the leaves on the trees. Beautiful.

However, it was overcast in the area around the Academy. Despite it being mid day, there were very little light coming through the clouds, making it seem dark and dreary. Much like what it was like before she flew out here, back in Arizona. It rarely got cloudy like that, but when it did, it brought the promise of rain. And when it rained there, it poured. So she was glad that she left as soon as she did. Besides, Arizona held memories for her that made her heart ache. A fresh start here. Maybe those memories would stop plaguing her here.

A worried voice from the voice tore her blue eyes away from the trees. "Are you sure you are alright? You don't have to go if you don't want to..." Rebecca's mother trailed off. She knew that her mother did not want her going to a school across the country. They had never been that far apart before. Yet, Rebecca did not want to stay there. Not after what had happened. She couldn't even bring herself to visit her friend.

"I'm fine." Her voice held no emotion in it, her eyes looking back at the school as the car pulled to a stop at the entrance. After a few minutes of goodbyes and hugs, Rebecca watched as the car pulled away. Her blue eyes then turned to the school in front of her. There was no going back now.

The boy held a bunny in his arms, sitting at a bench beside the chilly courtyard, and of course, the entrance. Despite the cool linger of the air, it was warmer than most days. The boy wore a light jacket on a day he thought would be freezing in Seattle. People changed with their surroundings. He coughed in irritation, petting the bunny with one hand and calmly pressing two fingers to his neck, glowing fingers. He breathed artificially for a few moments with a brief hint of worry, then carried on petting the bunny.

Chi had to get some fresh air, of course. He had to get her a cage. He looked down at the bunny who seemed content in his lap, a rabbit conditioned to accept him as his mother. He sighed with a smile. How did it get like this? There was a time when Logan felt a little odd using his power in the open. It's just that he had to use it more often, that it became more of a thing. It was no matter, though. He'd gotten better at using it. He'd gotten much better. Perhaps it was the urgency of his lungs, or the horrors of his evaluation.

Yes, Logan smiled at the bunny, assured that everything would be okay. That was, until there was a crack of a sound, the snapping of a tree branch nearby, dead and battered in the autumn wind. It was a side-effect of the frequent rain, and the rabbit got spooked, wriggling from Logan's grip in a panic, despite the boy's attempt to keep it at bay. It fled, with Logan in pursuit, in the direction of the girl, a Rebecca.

The school was beautiful. As simple as that. Fallen leaves began to layer the sidewalk. Soon, she assumed, there would barely be any sidewalk to be seen. Of course, this was based on the pictures she had seen of a stereotypical Northern fall. Where the leaves stuck to the sidewalk due to the recent rain, or the amount of people trotting on it. Not too far away was a fountain, it's rhythmic slashing blended well with the soft rustling of the trees. The red brick building past the fountain must be the school, Rebecca assumed. However, to the side, Rebecca could see bits of other buildings. Their use was unknown to her.

A movement caught her eye, and the blue haired girl froze. One hand on her suitcase, and the other on the strap of her backpack. A rabbit was pelting their way towards her, and a boy whom she had not seen before. Eyes wide, the newest student slipped her backpack off her shoulder and slowly set it on the ground. She needed both hands for this, didn't she? The animal was in a hurry, it looked like.

The creature altered it's path as soon as it reached her. Yet, Rebecca was able to scoop up the soft animal from the ground and hold it gently in her arms. After careful consideration, it looked scared. With a quirk of the corner of her mouth, Rebecca's face returned to being blank. "You're cute."

Logan caught up with the bunny, and reached the student, bending back and putting an arm to his head, panting from the panicked running he did. After a few brief moments of breath, he said, "Thanks for...catching her." He calmed himself and regained a steady breath. "And thanks, I get that a lot." Logan said this with a smirk, and held out empty arms to transfer the bunny back to him.

Blue eyes looked up from the bunny to the boy before carefully placing the soft animal in his arms. The blue haired girl flinched as the animal pushed off her right arm into his. It seemed her wound still hurt. Rebecca looked away from the boy and to her arm, which was wrapped in gauze in order to protect the burn wounds. It went up to just below her shoulder. Quickly, the girl repressed the surfacing memories, and kept her eyes on the rabbit.

She just nodded as he said thanks. Her eyes still on the bunny before her. The way it's nose twitched was adorable. Long ears only added to the overall cuteness. However, she frowned at the owners comment. Had he miss understood her compliment to the bunny? She should fix that. Standing upright, Rebecca shook her head back and forth. "No. You are not cute. The bunny is." Her voice was blunt and held little emotion in it.

"Oh." Logan let out a tepid laughter, one more so at the bluntness of what she had to say. She didn't even correct him on the merit of him "mistaking" her, but on the merit that he wasn't cute. What a fun person. "Well, thanks for helping him out, I guess..." With a wave and no longing to continue the conversation, he spun and began to walk.

Giving the boy a nod, she too began to move again. Picking up her dropped bag, and slinging it over her petite shoulders. Rebecca took a step before freezing in place. Where was she supposed to go again? Her dorm? The office? The library? Where even were the new students supposed to go? After a bit of thought, she reasoned that she should, head toward the offices. With that in mind, the blue haired girl took yet another step. Only to stop once again. Where was that? Blue eyes returned to the boy's retreating form. "Hey? " She asked with a tilt of her head. "Would you take me to the front office?"

Logan flinched and froze, a dry smile flashed at nothing in particular, a smile that was faced away from the girl. He stood for a second, one arm out while the other gripped the small bunny, leg in mid stride, before turning on a heel with a deceptively kind smile. Being a man of the infirmary, and therefore staff in a way, he nodded. "Sure." He looked down at Chi and bet it under the chin, the small animal obviously happy with it. "I'll have to drop her off at the infirmary first, though."

The girl only nodded, blue eyes traveling to the bunny that was happily being carried by the boy. Rebecca didn't know what to think of Beata yet. The boy seemed nice enough, and seemed caring towards the small animal. The school looked pretty as well, the fountain being the main point of the entrance. Just by the looks of the entrance, she expected the rest of the school to be just as jaw dropping. Thankfully, her mind was off of Arizona, and rather, on the bunny's name. "What did you name the rabbit?" Rebecca asked in a quiet, yet curious voice.

"Um..." He got a little self conscious of the name, thinking about it as he walked. How did they even come up with it? "Chi." Oh right, Chicago; he lived in Chicago. He was a really stupid kid, and did not want to explain how he was a stupid kid, and said silently: "Don't ask."

They had already reached the infirmary, and Logan opened the clear door, fogged with a medical symbol for lack of confusion. It was pretty empty, as it seemed to be over the beginning of the colder months. He silently began to fiddle with Chi's cage, using only one hand as he pried the rusty latch open. It was the problem with using an old cage found it the bowels of a storage closet somewhere: it was abandoned for a reason and abandoned in the 1850s. Thankfully, it opened without him having to ask help of the blank, uninteresting girl, and he put the bunny aside, the lazy animal too tired to give any resistance. He clapped his hands together, dusting them off of any rust and rabbit shedding, and said: "All right, let's go."

He began to walk to the exit, when a stern voice came over the intercom. "Students," it said, "Please stay inside. There has been a shooting in Rosebury, and we ask that you stay where you are. I repeat stay where you are."

Logan looked up at the fuzzy speaker with alarm. A shooting? How did that happen? Rosebury was peaceful; it had always been peaceful. Was the shooter coming to the campus? He looked at the girl, at first wordless, and grimly said, "I guess we're staying here." Logan moved to the door, pressed against the wall, looking out and waiting for a figure to appear at the gates, into a courtyard that was now surprisingly vacant. Would the victim be brought to the infirmary? He was the only one there?

That was, until a nurse bursted in, carrying a clipboard. The exasperation on her face was replaced with a smidgen of relief. "Oh, thank God, Logan, you're okay," she said, a familiar nursing helper he knew. Logan nodded with an uneasy smile, as she went, "Draw the blinds over the windows, please, for precaution." And he did so.

Rebecca nodded as she followed him into the nurse's office, taking special note of where it was so she could go in to get the dressings on her arm changed. Thankfully, she had gotten them changed before she had arrived in Beata. So Rebecca would have to get them changed tomorrow. The entire healing process with the arm had been painful despite the care that was put into taking care of the wound. She had been told to keep her arm moving, for cardiac and pulmonary reasons. Not that she knew exactly what she meant, but Rebecca assumed that it would be important.

The girl left her baggage outside in the hall, unwilling to fight with the door way to get them in, only for her to leave right after. The room inside carried the smell of cleaning supplies, reminding her vividly of the hospital. Suppressing a shiver, Rebecca waited patiently, watching the rabbit be put into the crate. Once he was finished, her blue eyes turned back to the exit, ready to leave.

The stern words came from the intercom, freezing the girl into place. A shooting? A memory from not too long ago flashed in the back of her mind. A man with a gun, barging into the store...The blue haired girl bit tongue and wheeled around to face Logan. Her knees felt weak, and she could feel her burn sting at the reminder of the event. Eyes widening, she took a good few steps away from the door.

The sudden opening of the door made Rebecca's heart leap in her chest and her knees to give out beneath her. Silently remembering how odd her panicking might look, the girl steeled herself, and brushed her dress off. Yet staying on the floor, a testament to how much she trusted her strength at the moment. Without saying a word, she stared up at the blinds, taking calming deep breaths.
