Shadow of the Day Empty
PostSubject: Shadow of the Day   Shadow of the Day EmptyFri Apr 26, 2013 9:48 pm

The sun crested over the top of the forest, creating shadows at the bases of the trees as Renard walked between them. He hadn't been in the forest before, but he felt that it could be peaceful... and truth be told, it kinda was. It was quiet and serene: perfect. Reaching the edge of the trees at one point of the forest, he decided to sit down and lean against the closest stump, closing his eyes for a few moments in silent contemplation. Opening them again, he fished in his pocket for a piece of the vase that Emily had previously broken, casually tossing it into the clearing. Once it landed, the sun cast its warmth upon the shard, creating a shadow for Renard to manipulate. Concentrating on it, he flicked a finger forward and the shadow broke free from the piece, slowly moving forward. The older student amused himself for a few minutes just moving the shadow back and forth and twisting its shape before he decided to try something a bit tougher.

Releasing the shadow from his concentration - and watching it return to the object - he took a look at the long shadow cast by one of the trees. Narrowing his eyes in concentration, he attempted to move the shadow from its natural home. He could've sworn he saw a part of it twitch, and one of the branches' shadows bobbed up and down as if the wind was blowing across it, but the larger shadow stayed put. Releasing his concentration, Renard sighed: he wasn't progressing nearly as much as he had hoped.

The faint sound of walking through the grass could be heard nearby. Zen was wondering the forest, not having much to do. As he entered the clearing, he saw the vase fragment, and the young man a moment later. He stood there for a moment before realizing that he should probably say something. "Oh, hey..." he said, walking over a bit, although a tad shyly.

Renard was staring at the shadows in silent frustration when a voice broke him from his reverie. He turned to see someone standing there, a male looking kind of shy. Now wasn't that familiar? "Oh, hey there," he replied, casting one last look at the shadows - as if they'd move somewhere - before turning his full attention to the person who had said hi. "Uh, I'm Renard. What's your name?" he murmured lamely, pushing himself to his feet as he greeted the boy.

"Z-Zen..." Zen said sheepishly, looking up at Renard, who was about 4 inches taller than him, which slightly intimidated him more than he already was. He started to glance around shyly from lack of anything to talk about, which was not surprising, seeing as it was his first day at the school, not to mention he had only been here for a few hours. Zen focused on the young man, hoping he would say something.

"Well, hey Zen," he replied, not exactly knowing what to say afterwards. Conversation wasn't exactly his strong suit, you know. Looking left and right, he decided to just let small talk dictate where the conversation would go. "So, are you new here?" He seemed new, and intimidated too, as the taller student tipped his head down to look him in the eyes. He didn't really feel that much taller, though.

Zen nodded his head in response to Renard's question before starting to speak. "I got here a few h-hours ago." he told him in an attempt to start a full conversation between them. Even though he was fairly shy, he figured he should get to know a few people when he could. Oblivious to it, the vase fragment behind Zen started to slowly ascend into the air on its own.

"Well, welcome to... to the academy." Renard's train of thought was derailed by the site of the vase fragment floating in mid-air. The immediate answer didn't occur to him as he stared blankly at it, before realizing that it couldn't be him, so it may just have something with the boy standing in front of him. "Uhm, what's your power, Zen?" This would be the easiest way to find out.

Zen looked at Renard slightly confused. Why was he looking over his shoulder? Zen turned around, and a blush broke out onto his face from seeing the fragment floating. "U-um...I..." he stuttered, ignoring Renard's question, more focused on trying to make the fragment come back down. After a moment, it dropped quicker than naturally, slamming against the ground and breaking into more pieces.

Renard's eyes widened as the fragment shattered further, smaller shadows appearing from the broken pieces. "You can move objects, I take it?" That made sense, at least to him. At least there were more pieces of that vase, stashed in a drawer so he could draw them out and practice with them.

Zen turned back to face Renard, hoping he would ignore the blush on his face. I c-can manipulate g-gravity, actually..." he said, his voice slightly quieter than before. Unable to think of anything else to say, Zen asked Renard a question. "W-what's your p-power?" he asked, curious of what it might be. He could not think of what it might be, which was mainly why he asked.

"Oh, well that's cool. My power is shadow manipulation." To demonstrate, Renard tipped his head and concentrated on the small shadows emanating from the shards of the vase. Flicking a finger forward, the shadows all broke free and started moving back and forth across the grass, almost as if they were dancing. That actually wasn't a bad display for him. Maybe he was making improvements after all.

Zen turned to see the shadows, and out of his great surprise from them, he stumbled backwards, bumping into Renard. He quickly turned again to face Renard, his blush returning. "S-sorry!" he stuttered out, clearly embarrassed by the fact that simple shadows had startled him so much.

Renard jumped back in surprise when Zen bumped into him, eyes wide as he brought a hand up to slowly run it across his own chest. "It's alright. It's no big deal." He tried to reassure the apologizing youth, not exactly how to deal with the situation at hand.

Zen looked at Renard as he brought as hand across his chest, slightly confused. "O-okay..." he said, still blushing. It took him a moment to think of something to say. "W-want me to g-go?" he asked, willing to leave if his presence was not wanted.

Renard shook his head, a slight frown on his face. "No, it's alright... I said that, didn't I? Don't worry about it." Renard was beginning to wonder about this school: it seemed everybody he met was withdrawn and/or shy. Sure, he was that way too... but since everybody else was, conversation was becoming close to impossible, never mind keeping one going without something awkward occurring. Was it because everybody had powers? Maybe we're all just weirdos...
