Kaya had thought the courtyard was magical. The only plant that grew in Arviat was the shortgrass, the melon-colored yellow rot that clung to the ground and regretted its sprouting. This place however, this North Dakota place, was magical. There were trees, something she had never seen on the flatlands of Nunavut. She ran through them in the first chance she got, after she abandoned her bag in her dorms. She didn't even take her coat; she only had a jacket, and the chill of the air was thrilling to her. It wasn't the whipping awful wind-fueled frigid that she faced in northern Canada. This was the sweet, wide-eyed fresh cold, the kind that kept you alert and comfortable and alive. It was something only the summer used to bring. She went at night, when this was most apparent.

She walked through the forest, touching every leaf. They felt funny on her fingertips, smelled like the air fresheners papa used to hang in the truck. She found a particularly large tree along the border of the campus, and she remembered K'umangapik teaching her to climb the houses, the schoolbuilding at dusk. Unfortunately, this was not the same, and though the girl was lightweight, and hugged the tree firmly, she could not get far. "Fuck." She mimicked the word papa would mutter under his breath all the time, interlaced with Inuktitut, and though she never knew what it meant, it felt scandalous on her breath. Her voice was soft and new; she coughed it scratchily.

There was a rustle nearby as she gave up on the tree, rubbing her head with her sweater sleeve. Kaya flinched, and instinctively crouched down. Out of it came the face of a caribou. No, it wasn't a caribou, it was something more slender. An impala? A buck? A deer? It looked at her with gleaming black eyes and its ears twitched.

It was only when she stepped forward that it flinched, and with a short hop, began to gallop towards her.

Kaya jumped as well, and threw her hand to the ground, a warm blip of red being tossed to the ground like a hacky sack, an oversized laser point, and it lingered, stayed on the floor. A yard or two from the girl, the deer stepped on the warm pulsating light, and its legs immediately froze like stone. It collapsed. She stood over it, fingers open and curling slightly. She blinked at it, her tongue pressed to her cheek ponderously.

She lifted up her sweater. There, pressed to her stomach, tucked into her skirt, was a knife. In her head, the cheers of the hunter men rung in her ears, pulsed like the light, like a headache, revolving around her in flashes, in an orchestra. And the natural instinct to follow was the blood. She crouched down next to it, its eyes looking up at her, its chest heaving heavily. It blinked a sleek-eyed blink. 'How do you do,' it's eyes said.

And with a smile, the voices vanished, and she placed the knife beside her on the dirt. She ran her half-sleeved hand over its fuzzy head. "Hello, sir," she said with a small, whispered giggle, "Hello, friend."

Sarah was taking a walk through the forest with her hands tucked in the pocket of her winter coat when she spotted the new girl, Kaya, apparently demonstrating her gift. She watched as the girl did something to the deer and then walk closer to it, after pulling out a knife. "Umm.. hi there!" she said awkwardly, not wanting to interrupt anything important Kaya may or may not be doing.

It was cold outside, but Minnie needed the refreshing air. Without a word to her roommates, she donned a coat and left with the idea of taking a walk. Her thick boots kept her feet warm as she walked towards the forest, the trees somehow inviting in the winter moonlight. It wasn't too late of an hour, and with her coat wrapped around her, she felt positive she could walk into the wee hours of the morning.

However, she was cut short when she stumbled across a somewhat strange scene. A girl was kneeling beside some animal on the ground, smiling as she stroked its face, and another girl had stepped forward and seemed to be trying to talk to her. Unsure of whether or not she wanted to take part in this, Minnie stayed behind a tree, watching them with her head tilted so she could hear them talking.

Kaya flinched, and spinning, raised her hand. A scarlet orb was in her hand, and there was a blank look in her eyes as she initially turned, but when she saw it wasn't a deer it faded. And when she saw it was her friend, she smiled. "Hello," she said, voice high in pitch and whimsically soft, words highlighted in the cold breath that streamlined from her mouth. "He is not harmed, I'm sorry. He just ran at me, it was kinda scary." She looked back down at the deer, and smiled harder. He was pretty cute when he was just looking at her, blinking and neutral, chest heaving with small gasps.

"Ahh that makes sense. I was wondering what's going on." she said, laughing sheepishly. The girl shivered from the cold."What are you doing out here so late?" she asked, stifling a yawn. It was hard for her to get to sleep before 2 in the morning, no matter how tired she felt.

As their conversation played out, Minnie suspected they already knew each other. Was this a planned meeting? And why was there a deer? Images of Satanic rituals came to mind and Minnie's heart started to thump in excitement. She secretly hoped she had stumbled across something either illegal or merely against the rules. It might not be the name she wanted to make for herself at this school, but it was a start. She shifted where she stood so she could hear better.

"I couldn't sleep," She said absentmindedly, stroking the large animal behind the ears. "This place is so big!" She practically spun as she rose from her crouch, rubbing one of her ankles with the toe of her shoe, and back again. They were sore. While Sarah was cold, Kaya seemed fine, despite only wearing a sweater and skirt. "These don't exist where I'm from. Trees, plants, deer. It is great, is it not?" She seemed like a kid in a candy store, and remarked more quietly, "They all feel weird," as if it were a forbidden thing to say. It was half a reflection, a vocalization of her thoughts, to herself.

"Come on, Sarah, pet him!" She danced over lightfootedly, grabbing the girl's hand in her own half-sleeved palm, and started to pull her towards the beast. "I think he likes me." She brought her other hand to her mouth, covering it from the beast in secrecy, as she whispered, "He tried to kill me a moment ago, but he was grumpy, perhaps, I think he likes me now."

Sarah let the girl pull her closer to the deer, smiling. She seemed excited, and petting a deer actually sounded really fun. Once they got close enough the Autumn kneeled down next to the deer and petted it. "I think he likes you too." she replied, smiling. "Although I've never actually seen a deer charge someone before. That's very weird."

The girl that had been crouched beside the deer was speaking oddly, as though English wasn't her first language. Both girls were further away than Minnie had originally thought, and she shifted again, trying to set her foot in a good place among the roots of the tree she leaned against. Thinking she had situated herself properly, she put all her weight on that foot and suddenly found herself slipping and falling. Involuntarily, she cried out, throwing her hands out to catch herself. Great. So much for staying hidden.

"Yes they do, silly person." Kaya tilted her head at Sarah. "I read about it in the National Geographic in one time, that is why I was prepared." Before she could let Sarah pet her new friend, there was a rustle, the light cry of a stumbling eavesdropper, and Kaya perked up like a prairie dog. "That was a person, or a deer who inhaled helium. I learned about helium in the National Geographic as well." She smiled despite the circumstance. "Let's investigate." And just like that, she had Sarah's hand once more, running toward the sound.

"Oh well alright then." she said, getting dragged off towards the noise they had heard. When they saw it was a girl, Sarah tilted her head to the side. "Were you... watching us?" she asked the girl lying on the ground.

Embarrassed, Minnie pushed herself off the forest floor and brushed the dirt and pine needles off her jacket. Pulling herself to her full height, she shoved her hands in her pockets and faced the girls.

"No, I wasn't," she said, forcing her voice to remain steady. "I just...tripped." She hoped her blatant lie wasn't obvious.

It was obvious. Kaya blinked down, however, and seemed to abandon any inkling of anger that may have come across her. After a moment of contemplation, she gave a friendly smile. "Hello," she said politely, offering a sleeved hand, the fingers peeking out over the top. "Would you like to pet a deer?"

Sarah was confused on why Kaya's anger was dropped so suddenly but didn't push it. She didn't really say anything as the initiate offered for the girl to pet the deer.

Minnie glanced down at the girl's hand and then back up. Without taking the offered hand, she nodded.
"I'd like to pet it, if that's alright," she said, trying to maintain her aloofness. How the girl had managed to calm a deer, she didn't know, but if she had the chance to be up close with it, she would take it.
