PostSubject: The Informal (Open to any loser without a date)   The Informal (Open to any loser without a date) EmptySat Dec 12, 2015 7:28 pm

He had seen it on social media, an Esper post, one from that 'Party Master' Jake. He was going to the formal with Jane. He'd never slouched harder in his chair. He had already figured out Sophia was booked for the formal through whispers in his dorm room, the pros and cons of rooming with a girl you were intimate with. He let out a sigh, wondering where his feet would take him the night of the formal, where the music flooded onto the pathways of the courtyard. Where they were right, he turned left, and before he knew it, he found himself walking into his home: the infirmary.

There was an immediate exhalation from Madison, who had been standing as the lights came on, overtaking her nightstand lamp. Her body was twisted, heads turned to Logan. She had been stretching her torso, ribs and back still painful from the accident. She tried to look natural in spinning to face the infirmaryhand, who smirked at her, tossing an apple up and down, one he had picked up from the cafeteria a few minutes prior.

"Um, w-where, uh, what are you doing here, if you don't mind--I mean..." She plopped down on the side of her bed, wondering if he'd yell at her for moving too much. For a shut-in, she wanted nothing more than to run, or swim, or do something mobile; she was tired of being rigid.

"I work here," he said in a lighthearted whim, sliding into his desk chair and letting the momentum roll him to the wall.

"What about the dance, uh, formal?" She put a hand to her forehead, wincing as she revolved to face him.

"Why, do you not want me here?"

Madison felt like she could die from the misunderstanding. "No!" She practically shouted, and clearing her throat unnaturally, reversed with a: "Uh, no, I thought you'd have a date or...something."

"Nah." Logan threw the apple up one more time before catching it on the way down, taking a bite out of it. Mouth full, he added, "Forgot to get one. Do you want to be my date?"

She hardly knew him, but her face was erupting with magmalike redness. "Sure, um, but I can't leave."

"Well then we'll stay right here." Logan pulled over his laptop, taking another bite from the fruit as he opened it up. He was greeted by a chat window, from Esper, an opened PM to Jane. He frowned at it, hesitant on what do to, and closed out.

PostSubject: Re: The Informal (Open to any loser without a date)   The Informal (Open to any loser without a date) EmptySat Dec 12, 2015 9:12 pm

A formal dance. Normally, Owen would have been all over it. The lights, the dressing up, the laughter, the talking with pretty girls in nice dresses. He and his friends had gone to homecoming a couple of times, and each time, he had ended the night in a fantastic mood. Now, however, he had watched some of his dorm mates get dressed up and leave, ready to spend the night in a way Owen wished he was up for. After the month he had had, however, he had no energy to try and make new friends.

He would go for it after the break. He knew Madison and Nicola, and they were good people to know, but he needed some other friends, ones who wouldn't nearly get him killed. As he sat in his dorm room common area, eating cereal and watching Wheel of Fortune, he wondered if Madison would have said yes to him if they hadn't been hurt. He imagined getting dressed up and meeting her. Somehow, trying to picture Madison in an elegant dress was difficult. It stopped the daydream in its tracks.

As the game show drew to a close, he stood from the couch, switching the television off. Bowl in hand, Owen crossed to the sink in the corner and rinsed it out before setting it inside. He crossed to his bedroom. Sweatpants and a baggy sweatshirt weren't exactly acceptable "going-out" attire. In his closet, he had all of his uniform shirts and pants hanging up, freshly laundered. His ties were all looped messily over the bar in the closet, the school ones to the left and the extras to the right. He grabbed a shirt and his nicest pair of pants, then looked through the extra ties before picking a solid blue one, a pale color that his mom always said brought out his eyes.

Hurriedly, he changed, fighting the urge to roll back his sleeves in an effort to keep it formal. A quick trip to the bathroom saw him brushing his teeth and actually combing his hair, something he was sure he hadn't done in ages. The slight curls on the top of his head wouldn't straighten entirely, but the messy look was gone, and that was all Owen wanted. Once he was satisfied, he grabbed his last clean jacket, a slightly nicer one that his mom insisted he bring despite his never wearing it at home, and left the dorm.

The winter chill set in quickly, manifesting itself in the cloud of breath that escaped Owen's mouth. He glanced around and saw figures walking through the night, some in dresses, heading towards the Great Hall. Their bright colors stood out in the darkness, and he felt a homesickness ache in his chest,  imagining his friends being with him.

The courtyard distracted him. It was full of flowers, he knew, and it might be some strange kind of irony to grab some before he went to the infirmary. He could say they were "get well" flowers, not "I'd like to be your date" flowers. In a rush, he picked several flowers, grouping them together in his fist. They were a modge-podge of all varieties, but he thought the colors looked nice, and he was sure Madison wouldn't mind.

Walking to the infirmary felt lonely. It was dark and everyone was heading the opposite direction. While he walked, he studied the flowers, touching each of them with a fingertip. Without meaning to, he caused each one to glow dimly, something he wasn't aware of being able to do. They looked much better.

At the door to the infirmary, Owen hesitated. He convinced himself that even if they ended up just sitting and watching a movie or talking, he would be content. After taking a deep breath, he pulled open the door and stepped inside. The infirmary was empty aside from Madison and a teenage boy, someone who Owen knew spent a lot of time in the infirmary. They were seating near each other.

The Informal (Open to any loser without a date) Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Informal (Open to any loser without a date)   The Informal (Open to any loser without a date) EmptyMon Dec 14, 2015 6:20 pm

After that one awkward bout of events that spanned in the course of five days and the school buzzing with the Formal, Nicola grew more grateful that she chose to hang out in the infirmary instead of going to the overcrowded grand hall. As the days inched closer and all everyone was ever talking about was who they'd ask out, what dress they would wear, who would win the nominations, she had become more agitated, nearly wanting to snap the head of a few students off when she was trying to study in the library and they kept arguing about who'd ask the cute guy sitting alone in an isolated table, hoping to cram for his quantum physics test. She was this close to ripping her sword out of her arm and slicing their mouths off or jabbing it down their throats so they'd shut up. Thank the lord she had viciously shut her books closed and left to go back to her dorm. At least her roommates weren't so obnoxious about the school dance. The formal was way too overhyped.

It was fucking stupid.

Formal day had already come by and she'd confined herself to her dorm for the most part after awhile, half because it'd be best not to leave and let her nearly detached foot rest and half because, if she heard one more little rumor about that god-forsaken dance, she'd have everyone's heads. Nicola could only faintly recall the fact that she had somewhat promised Madison to drop by the infirmary that day, only to grab those antibiotics, but she really didn't feel like getting up from the couch. It was too comfortable and she found herself stretched out like a cat, her gigaminx in hand, shuffling over and over, the constant whir and click as the colors moved themselves around.

The television was turned on to some old cartoon program about some obscure boy and his neverending, stretchable dog, the remote resting on the coffee table a good way apart from the sofa. All of the noise registered in her mind as white noise as she raced through her mind the process of DNA replication again. Apparently, the school didn't want her to get too far ahead of the rest of her classmates and stuck her in to relearn the basics of biology for what... the fifth time? It was boring her to death. At least give her a pedigree or some Punnett squares to solve for probability or chi square. Logarithms, pH, anything? But nooo, it was stupid replication.

[a giant paragraph about DNA replication has been omitted to save you guys from dying]

After going through the entire concept a good five times later, Nicola's eyes turned to the clock lazily, a yawn sounding from her lips. Her hand raised up slowly, trying to rub the sleepiness away. 8:47? With a groan, she mumbled, "Five more minutes..." to no one in particular, flopping unceremoniously back onto the red velvety cushions. She rested her hand on her forehead, the amalgamation of a 3D shape sitting squarely next to the remote, and she was laying around thinking about absolutely nothing. Even after trying so hard, she couldn't come up with a decent topic that didn't involve more school work, the school dance, or the infirmary. None of those choices sounded particularly pleasant - she didn't want to get up -, but at least going to the infirmary meant seeing Madison again. Oh, and there was Flashlight too. He was always a good time.

One groan later, she swung her legs off to the side, landing on the ground with the tips of one set of toes. Wobbling in an awkward struggle back to her room, Nicola dearly wished she had accepted the metal brace or cast or crutch when she had the chance. Or you know, hadn't gotten so caught up with settling things with her friends and actually grabbed the antibiotics the first time she was there. Fun times. She opened her closet and deftly grabbed a set of clothes to change into before heading into the bathroom.

Turning on the water and letting it run, the steam rising high into the sky as it ran down like raindrops on a gloomy day, she didn't take too much time to finish her shower and put on another outfit. Maybe her friends could reprimand her for how childish it was later, but oh well. They weren't likely to judge each other. Dark maroon beanie and cardigan, seifuku-styled shirt, and even darker overalls. The socks were patterned with stripes and when she looked up, she couldn't help but feel that the beanie didn't work as well as her ratty old cap. She could use it, but it was so beaten up nowadays that she figured she should try to clean it a bit. That single gold earring wasn't helping much, though. Nicola didn't waste anytime to grab a handkerchief with an obscure symbol on it and pin it on with a safety pin on one sleeve.

The mirror showed a decent enough reflection, only strands of peachy white hair sticking out here and there, but hey, she didn't care too much about appearance anyway. Her slightly odd eye coloring stuck out more than ever with the darkly shaded clothes. At least the vision over there wasn't getting too bad. Could be better. Shouldn't complain about something she had done, a small bit she had given up in an attempt to revive her brother. They worked out in the end after all. Granted, being a ghost seemed boring as hell.

Without waiting any further, she opened the window from her dorm, stepping out into the balcony. Her hand clung onto the sill a bit, and after a few moments, she leaped into the air, winter biting at her cheeks. She held her beanie tight to her head so it wouldn't fly away with the wind, and after a rather poor display of a landing, shifting too much of her weight to one side, Nicola took a mad sprint to the infirmary as quickly as she could. Frosty billows drifted out past her lips in her ragged breathing, taking time to drink in the courtyard's scenery.

A few days ago, she thought this place was evil and terrible. And after then, she at least thought it was better, that it was that school she had first come to back as a little eight year-old. Friends do that, I guess. She boasted the idea of having a lot of friends, but never growing a genuinely close relationship to any of them left her hanging a bit.

By the time she had run up the stairs and reached the infirmary, Nicola was panting heavily at the door behind Owen, slumping against the frame in hopes of catching her breath. God, how'd he get here before her? How early did he leave to have time to get some flowers and the like? She eyed him curiously, partially ashamed of herself for not remembering to grab something for Madison, but turned towards the girl in question, who was with one of the infirmary helpers. Too bad she didn't know his name.

Looks like nobody has said anything yet.

Nicola cleared her throat, as if to catch the attention of the others inside the room. "Mind if I crash here for the night?" Well, even if they said no, she was planning to anyway. If Winter Formal was supposed to be a wonderland, at least let her make it wherever she wanted it to be. She was just glad that the heating there wasn't as drafty and cold as her dorm.

Rhett cracked an eye open at the noise. He was still here in the infirmary, for the third month, all because his leg wasn't healing properly. Damn that horse. A soft grumble of pain escaped him as he turned onto his back, eyes half-lidded. There were a few people in here, all he'd never talked to once. Not like he could, with an infected leg drowning out most other outside influences. What day was it anyway?

The faint music coming from the Grand Hall told him exactly what day it was. "Oh well. Not like I had a date anyway," he grumbled to himself, stretching upwards. Much to his surprise, there was someone beside his bed. His little sister. How long was she there anyway? Sydney had her head on the bedside table, craning her neck to use it as a pillow while she slept. The older brother scratched at his cast in a vain attempt to satisfy the itch that had grown there. He glanced up with tired eyes, glancing about the room wearily.

"Anybody got a pillow for this idiot?" he muttered, throwing his blanket over the sleeping girl.

Louis walked from the formal to the infirmary formal. He felt like a total loser, not having a date and practically walking to this place outta shame. After a 3 minute walk or so, Louis finally arrived. He was about to open the door, hearing voices inside but hesitated. I'm still wearing my suit. What if they...don't want me? The blonde was about to go back to his dorm, but made up his mind.

Screw it. Tonight was supposed to be fun and it will be. He thought determinedly. The tall blonde opened the door, peering in only to see a few students. Closing it softly, he glanced around at the people. Some were there for fun, but a guy or two actually looked hurt. "Hey, heard there was a special party in here." He said, trying not to show his timid side.

A party? Logan looked up from his laptop when he heard this word, seeing the people streaming in. It was a side affect of having lights on on the day of the formal. People must had thought this was some underground party, some better one off the beaten path. He didn't feel like he could compete, and said with a smile, "We're just a bunch of people hanging out, if you call that a party. You're welcome to stay." It wasn't like he could turn them away. It was accessible school property.

The boy pressed enter on his keyboard, a little too triumphantly, and music began to play dimly from his speakers, a Spotify mix he'd found online.

Madison looked up from where she sat, relieved to see the faces of Owen and Nicola, blinking at the strangers and saying nothing to them. "Hey...!" she said warmly, hoarsely with the followup of a striking cough. It seemed that stretching wasn't so great for an aftermath. "Is this going to be a sleepover or, erm, party or something...?" It excited her to think about, something she'd never been to much of. Lame ol' Maddie, afraid of the dark. She hated people calling her that since Suzy Forsyth took pleasure in it during the fifth grade. It was the last sleepover she'd attended.

Louis took the light blue suit jacket off and placed it on a chair. "That's cool. Maybe it'll be more fun cause there are not as many people." He gave a somewhat timid smiled towards the boy who replied. Looking around, there weren't that many people, but enough to have fun. Don't be awkward. Go say hello. He thought to himself, trying to boost confidence. He walked over to a clump of students, hoping to make conversation. "Hi, uh, I'm Louis." He said with a smile, his voice a bit shaky. It was somewhat dim were he stood, he looked at who the girl was talking to, soon towards her. And then... a way of "love at first sight" struck him in the face with the weight of the universe. When I saw you I fell in love, and you smiled because you knew. The blonde randomly quoted William Shakespeare in his head.

All sorts of people were showing up to the infirmary. Owen half wondered if there had been any sort of invitation sent out that he had missed somehow. Flowers in his hand, he crossed to Madison's bed and set them on the small table beside it. There was an open chair next to it, and he snatched it with one hand, pulling it closer so he could sit next to Madison.

Whoopsie, silly her. There were other patients in the area besides only Madison. One boy had voiced something along the lines of getting a pillow for another random, and her hands snatched one from the nearest vacant bed. Without warning, Nicola threw it to the location she believed the voice came from, the lop-sided cloth bag swaying through the air. "Your welcome." Even without as much of a peep for 'thank you', it was to be expected. Might as well say it in advance before it slipped out of her mind. Turning her attention back to her friends and the student volunteer, her mouth opened up to say something again, only to be interrupted by another guy. Eyebrows taut, a quick spin on her good foot allowed her to face the culprit.

Tucking her thumbs into her cardigan pockets, her gaze thoroughly examined the boy standing at the front of the door, as though she were a teacher inspecting a student whose every action proved themselves guilty. Awkwardly long blonde hair sweeping across honey brown eyes that betrayed timidness. Too lanky, sitting on the tall side. Probably about the same height as Owen, if not a bit shorter. Didn't seem to be the most athletic type and the queasy smile was just that. Queasy. Nicola was almost tempted to call him out on his acting skills - he was an outsider in his formal clothes anyway -, but bit back her response. Right, right... didn't need to nearly get killed by more monsters again.

The newcomers had kept everyone else quiet and her head snapped back to Logan when his voice rose up. And the mention of a party stuck on her. To be frank, the infirmary would be the last place anyone would be holding a party. It was dull, boring, and the stand-offish white didn't work. You couldn't do much of anything when you had to constantly worry about not breaking medicine cabinets or knocking over some prescription drugs or dropping syringes on the floor. Besides, there were other people inside that were trying to recover from whatever infliction cursed them.

At least, that's what she thought logically. Truth be told, sprucing the place up a bit would be great. Sure, there was the actual Formal where people were having the party of their lives - rumors have told that the punch gets spiked every year - and they were stuck in some lame ol' nurse's office. A smile widened on her lips when Madison mentioned a sleepover. "I'm up for that~" She never had the opportunity to go to when. Overprotective as hell mom and a dad who hated her because of her hair color. Running away from home. Getting your brother killed. Good times, everyone. "'course, if you're alright with Owen and I stayin' here, nurse boy."

Boy who finally decided to give his name - Louie or something - and Nicola couldn't help but frown at the guy's shaky voice. Come on, there wasn't anybody intimidating around. Owen's practically the same height as him and she couldn't say that he had the excuse of "big guy being mean"; besides, Owen could be considered a giant, fuzzy, and cuddly bear in a way. Sort of. But he was still a flashlight. And she realized that Louis had walked right up to her, ignoring her with some star-struck look in his eyes. Nicola grimaced and stood up on her toes, waving her hands in front of his face.

"Earth to Louie. Are you even alive or are you wandering in dreamland?"

Before he could reply, Nicola slumped back on one of the chairs with a huff, swinging herself in an unbalanced manner. That was annoying. Madison didn't ever seem to give the greatest of impressions and was an awkward as hell wall flower, but this? This was just... ugh. That's going a bit too far. Was this going to be another tragedy ripping off Romeo and Juliet?

If it was, at least the guy dies. All everyone else has to do is stop "Juliet" from stabbing herself and they all lived happily ever after. Except Romeo. Obviously.

Madison had been preoccupied with her normal group of students, her two best and only friends, to notice the new boy in the mix. The long-haired lanky boy walked up with a nervous disposition, even greater than one she would give off. She looked up at him, feeling small as she sat bedridden, and smiled shyly, a little indirectly, eyes looking towards Owen immediately, then Nicola. "Hey...," she said quietly. She let Nicola take over with harassing the boy, mouth agape and feeling awkward. It didn't take a rocket scientist to read this Louie's body language.

Watching Nicola interacting with this other boy-- Louie?-- Owen smiled. It was nice to have a reason to relax a little, even though he had come all dressed up. The flowers he had brought seemed to brighten the space just the littlest bit, and he could tell that Madison felt relieved to have some friends there to distract her. As Nicola sat down, he turned his attention to Madison, the reason he had come here in the first place.

"So how are you doing?" he asked, smiling at her. "Are you feeling a lot better?" He was worried some of her injuries would inhibit her for the rest of her life. People didn't usually fall from a high window and survive, and if they did, they tended to be crippled.

Louis was brought back to the world of the living when a girl suddenly jumped in front of him and waved her hands, extremely close to his face. "Uh...Hi? No, I'm alive." He said timidly, feeling like a total idiot. "So...What's the plan for tonight? I mean, not plan but uh..." He said running the back of his neck awkwardly.

PostSubject: Re: The Informal (Open to any loser without a date)   The Informal (Open to any loser without a date) EmptyMon Dec 21, 2015 6:49 pm

Kicking her feet up onto the night table, Nicola leaned back, head resting on her arms. From what it looks like so far, Madison wasn't doing so bad. At least, not as bad as she should be doing after dropping from a two-story building down to the courtyard without so much as a cushion to break the fall. There should've been some kind of damage that was more or less visible, but it wasn't visible; could be an internal injury. Owen already took over the job of asking about her condition, so she eyed the other boy in an almost suspicious manner. He was awful at hiding his body language, and the worst part? This guy seemed way too shy and antsy over absolutely nothing.

Then again...

Owen may or may not still be intimidated by her. Oh, right. Duh. It probably was her, wasn't it? An exasperated sigh left her lips, and she glanced from her friends to the new guy, drinking in as much information as she could extract from his appearance alone. Clearly came to the infirmary from the Formal being held or else he's one of those people he liked wearing fancy clothes all the time to show off their wealth, but he didn't see confident enough to do that. His hair was much longer than what one would consider the norm for a guy; he seemed to be taking decent care of it that maybe it came off as almost girly, like he spent time looking at the mirror everyday to make sure not a single strand was popping out from the side. Anxious disposition, a somewhat quiet voice, and it was as transparent as ice that he was probably an introvert who would be hiding behind someone else instead of trying to start the conversation himself. And he was one of those stupid ones who fell in love at first sight instead of getting to know the person. Disgusting. What was this, a dumb romance novel?

Once he managed to respond to her statement, Nicola flicked a strand of silvery-white hair out, a tired and almost bored expression plastering her face. He was asking about a plan. It was supposed to be some quick visit and maybe a small party between her and her friends and this guy just crashed in without knowing what the hell he was doing. How lame. "What's the point in plannin' something like this?" Her fingers were messing with a lock of hair, twisting and turning and letting it get entangled as though she were half-heartedly paying attention to the conversation. "Louise, do you even know the definition of 'fun'?"

Planning out every single event was stupid and boring. Just let it happen and improvise.

That was what got her into more trouble than she had hoped for in the first place, though... Eh, oh well.

"Just relax a bit. Nothing bad is gonna happen." But with their current series of unfortunate events, she silently crossed her fingers and hoped she hadn't jinxed it. There was no way she would be able to fight and defend every single person in the infirmary in her current condition and she didn't trust any of their capabilities to survive. No offense to them. Sort of.

It seemed that in the development of this group clusterfuck, Logan had disappeared. Though it seemed he had left the room, and Madison noticed this and feared the worst judgments, he'd actually disappeared under his desk. He came back up, a case of beer in his hand. "There's a mini fridge down here," he announced proudly. "I knew it'd pay to stock up. The plan is for a full out party; help yourselves." Of course, such a storage was dangerous, but danger meant nothing to Logan. He wheeled out on his chair, carrying the case of liquid by the group, overshooting his mark. He has sure there was food in there too...
