Like an odd sunflower, Cayden sat on the upper branches of a tree, enjoying the winter sun that filtered through the spindly branches that were stripped bare of all leaves. His eyes were closed, and his hands empty, the most vulnerable he possibly could be, while the sun remained in the sky. His skin was literally glowing like he was some crappy vampire from a trashy romance novel series of eons past, but to a glancing stranger, it could be passed off as an odd refraction of the light. If anything, the way he dressed was far more attention grabbing. A loose grey tank top with the american flag, and a pair of cut off denim shorts, which was fine, except the weather was freezing.

At home, or in another life, he'd play along. Cayden was used to dressing in scarves and jumpers to maintain a facade of being 'normal'. He was so damn good, he even remembered to rub his hands together and shiver every now and then. But if there was one perk of being here, it was that no one gave a shit about his powers other than to demand he improve his control. Which, if he was to be honest, was better than most around these parts. He'd actually used his abilities to fight, unlike a few that seemed terrified of themselves. Pathetic. It erked him to see people squandering their gifts. All this potential and some of them would rather play house.

Still half-napping, he frowned as whatever peace he was enjoying was shattered by his own thoughts. If it wasn't strangers and teachers milling about and taking away what littler peace and privacy he had, it apparently would be himself. Shaking his head, Cayden stretched out his whole body to working out any kinks before in one smooth movement, he leapt to the ground like a cat. Landing on his feet, he stretched once again. Not really noticing much.

Sometimes it felt like she knew this forest better than her own dorm. It was full of bends and twists and thick undergrowth, a natural maze of gnarled trees and old steadfast oaks, but you always knew what to expect. Trails, trees, and birdsong. Nothing exciting, nothing surprising, nothing interesting. There were the weirdos, but Beata Academy was a school full of weirdos. And it was refreshing that way, in all its unchanging dullness. That's what she loved about this place. Here, more than anywhere else, she could just hide away for a bit.

Besides, it was better than drinking inside all day. The cool air cleared her head, and getting her legs moving made her feel at least a bit more productive than usual.

This, however, wasn't normal.

The cold bit right through her coat and scarf, but despite that, he was sitting perched up in the branches in shorts and a tank-top. Blond hair, amber eyes, in a way he looked like Jace, but despite his eye-catching appearance, she found it hard to look at him for long. It was like staring at a lightbulb, contrasted against the dull browns and grays of the autumn forest.

He wasn't looking at her. She hadn't exactly been stealthy, but her gift had let her slip past unnoticed until now. But anxiety froze her in place. The ground was blanketed in dead leaves that made sneaking off impossible, even under the best of circumstances. Her gift could only help her so much.

So... maybe she'd just... stand here for a bit.

And then he jumped down.

Evelyn squeaked, throwing herself backwards to avoid him, and sending up a flurry of leaves as she hit the ground.

Life on the run from parents and other annoyingly well meaning adults had honed Cayden's spatial awareness and general survival instincts to a fine point. He took pride in always knowing a way out of a place before even entering, an essential skill for anyone wanting to dodged authority. Naturally, in this hole he had loosened the reins a bit, while some kids were dangerous enough to warrant an US Military raid looking for weapons of mass destruction, he doubted many had the killing instinct to use it. Even Pepper had chosen to intimidate rather than actually attack. But to have not noticed a whole, living, breathing person was surprising.

Surprising enough that he instinctually lashed out with a beam of light. Enough to have withered trees catch a spark, whatever leaves remaining serving as tinder.

Luckily, it was delayed enough that whoever it was didn't get scorched. More a heat wave that brushed past like stepping out into the midday sun after a day indoors. But the intent was clear.

Hands glowing even more intensely than his body was before, he stood over the girl on the floor. His head tilting from side to side like a jackal, sizing up his prey. Not for long though, Cayden could feel the beginnings of an ache when he tried too hard to focus.

Odd.

"Lurking in the bushes isn't as sexy as Hollywood makes it seem, you know. A simple hello could have saved poor Mr Tree here a world of pain." He patted the now smoking tree, without his heat to fuel the flames, the cold winter winds snuffed it before anything more exciting could happen.

It happened almost too fast to register.

She twisted to catch her fall, but too slow, and caught the brunt of the impact with her shoulder. A hard shock ran down her arm as she rolled onto her back. Fuck...! Her head was spinning from the pain and the embarrassment, a hundred different worst case scenarios running through her head. Of course she had to get caught. That was her luck. The winter canopy spun above her, a storm of dead leaves set against a backdrop of shivering trees and a sky the color of old slush.

Then it happened. Red filled her vision, and in an instant, the sky seemed to melt away into a bloody sunset. The leaves she'd kicked up in her fall all disintegrated into ash, vaporized in a wave of heat. Her heart stopped, time stopped, and after what felt like an eternity, Evelyn realized she'd been holding her breath. She let out a low sigh, a strange mixture of fear and relief, and closed her eyes. The entire ordeal had happened and ended in a blink of an eye, but the laser was still scorched into her vision like an afterimage. Sunspots danced in her head, and it felt like another lifetime before she mustered up the courage to open her eyes again and turn her head.

The tree behind her, where she'd been standing just an instant before, was charred and smoking.

It didn't take long for her to realize that she'd almost just died. Evelyn turned her head, her mouth hanging open, to stare at the person who'd almost just barbecued her on a whim. There was a hungry look in his eyes. She couldn't help but feel like a mouse who'd just wandered into a lion's den.

He started to talk, but he might as well have been speaking a different language. Was he trying to joke around? Taunt her? None of his words clicked in her head. All her racing thoughts from before had disappeared, melted away in the beam of light with the leaves, and a raw fear had flooded her head to fill the void. She could only be aware of the beating of her heart, the heat dissipating into the cold, and the face of the boy standing over her.

Right then, she should've just gotten up and ran, but it was like all the life had been sucked out of her limbs. Escaping barely even crossed her mind. It took what felt like forever before her brain kicked back into gear. "I-I-I, u-uh, ummm, I d-d-di-didn't mmm-mean..." Her voice came out hoarse, her tongue twisted itself into knots, and it was like five different jumbled apologies and excuses came pouring out at once. She couldn't even finish her sentence, whatever it was she'd even wanted to try and say, and she choked on the rest of the words with a flinch. Despite the cold, a bead of sweat ran down the side of her face.
