HELLO FROM THE OUTSIDEEE Empty

Sometimes it felt like she knew this forest better than her own dorm. It was full of bends and twists and thick undergrowth, a natural maze of gnarled trees and old steadfast oaks, but you always knew what to expect. Trails, trees, and birdsong. Nothing exciting, nothing surprising, nothing interesting. There were the weirdos, but Beata Academy was a school full of weirdos. And it was refreshing that way, in all its unchanging dullness. That's what she loved about this place. Here, more than anywhere else, she could just hide away for a bit.

Besides, it was better than drinking inside all day. The cool air cleared her head, and getting her legs moving made her feel at least a bit more productive than usual.

This, however, wasn't normal.

The cold bit right through her coat and scarf, but despite that, he was sitting perched up in the branches in shorts and a tank-top. Blond hair, amber eyes, in a way he looked like Jace, but despite his eye-catching appearance, she found it hard to look at him for long. It was like staring at a lightbulb, contrasted against the dull browns and grays of the autumn forest.

He wasn't looking at her. She hadn't exactly been stealthy, but her gift had let her slip past unnoticed until now. But anxiety froze her in place. The ground was blanketed in dead leaves that made sneaking off impossible, even under the best of circumstances. Her gift could only help her so much.

So... maybe she'd just... stand here for a bit.

And then he jumped down.

Evelyn squeaked, throwing herself backwards to avoid him, and sending up a flurry of leaves as she hit the ground.

It happened almost too fast to register.

She twisted to catch her fall, but too slow, and caught the brunt of the impact with her shoulder. A hard shock ran down her arm as she rolled onto her back. Fuck...! Her head was spinning from the pain and the embarrassment, a hundred different worst case scenarios running through her head. Of course she had to get caught. That was her luck. The winter canopy spun above her, a storm of dead leaves set against a backdrop of shivering trees and a sky the color of old slush.

Then it happened. Red filled her vision, and in an instant, the sky seemed to melt away into a bloody sunset. The leaves she'd kicked up in her fall all disintegrated into ash, vaporized in a wave of heat. Her heart stopped, time stopped, and after what felt like an eternity, Evelyn realized she'd been holding her breath. She let out a low sigh, a strange mixture of fear and relief, and closed her eyes. The entire ordeal had happened and ended in a blink of an eye, but the laser was still scorched into her vision like an afterimage. Sunspots danced in her head, and it felt like another lifetime before she mustered up the courage to open her eyes again and turn her head.

The tree behind her, where she'd been standing just an instant before, was charred and smoking.

It didn't take long for her to realize that she'd almost just died. Evelyn turned her head, her mouth hanging open, to stare at the person who'd almost just barbecued her on a whim. There was a hungry look in his eyes. She couldn't help but feel like a mouse who'd just wandered into a lion's den.

He started to talk, but he might as well have been speaking a different language. Was he trying to joke around? Taunt her? None of his words clicked in her head. All her racing thoughts from before had disappeared, melted away in the beam of light with the leaves, and a raw fear had flooded her head to fill the void. She could only be aware of the beating of her heart, the heat dissipating into the cold, and the face of the boy standing over her.

Right then, she should've just gotten up and ran, but it was like all the life had been sucked out of her limbs. Escaping barely even crossed her mind. It took what felt like forever before her brain kicked back into gear. "I-I-I, u-uh, ummm, I d-d-di-didn't mmm-mean..." Her voice came out hoarse, her tongue twisted itself into knots, and it was like five different jumbled apologies and excuses came pouring out at once. She couldn't even finish her sentence, whatever it was she'd even wanted to try and say, and she choked on the rest of the words with a flinch. Despite the cold, a bead of sweat ran down the side of her face.
