There's are strange rumors spreading around Covington...

It's a small North Dakota town of less than 10,000, but it's caught the Academy's attention thanks to a slew of child disappearances over the past week. The local children have been clamoring about a straw man with a pumpkin head who leaps from rooftop to rooftop during the night... and crawls through the windows of naughty children to steal them away.

They call him the Pumpkin King.

He has a magical staff made out of willow, and lives inside the wych elm at the Covington Cemetery. After he abducts the children, he eats them, or enslaves them, or turns them into pumpkins, depending on which playground rumor you choose to believe. Children have an active imagination, don't they? But while parents might not take these stories seriously, the recent disappearances have been troubling... For that reason, Beata Academy has sent a group of students to investigate.

You're greeted by crooked iron gates at Covington Cemetery just as the clock strikes midnight, armed with weapons and flashlights. The wind whispers through the trees, making them rustle like reaching hands, and there's an edge to the darkness that sends chills down your spine... There's only a crescent moon for light. Other than that, it's pitch black, and tendrils of fog weave through the tombstones.

On the far side of the cemetery is the wych elm.

You're not scared, are you?

Hell no!

Ashleigh smirked as she stood in front of those wrought-iron gates, shining her flashlight across the despairing area. Disparea. It was exciting. Her weapon was in her other hand, but she doubted that she'd need it. This was some bullshit, but it was a cool opportunity to scare people, or something like that.

She wanted to go in there right away, but she felt like it'd be best to wait for everyone else to be 'mentally prepared'. It was even foggy. Just the perfect night for spooks and stuff. Tapping her foot impatiently, she glanced around and waited.

Destiny stood at the gate with a bored expression on her face. If they were attempting to scare her then it wasn't going to work. She lived and breathed scenes like this. Well maybe not, but it was rather normal for her. If she wanted she could raise all of the dead in this yard right now, and probably scare some other students half-to-death, but if she did that then they wouldn't have a force needed to fight whoever this Pumpkin King was. Honestly the Spring prefect felt like that should be her title.. Well she was the King of the undead.. but she wanted the Pumpkin King title too!

She stood there with her scythe in her right hand, and a flashlight in the other. Honestly she didn't need the flashlight. She was in a graveyard, if something moved any undead would tell her. If she decided to use them anyway. Honestly she felt like if any stranger looked at her they would say she belonged here with her scythe, and strange hair and eyes and whatnot. The girl shifted her weight to her right side and leaned on her scythe a little bit.

Unlike the other two, Anima wasn't so fearless. She only came along for the mission because she wanted an excuse to practice using her gift. After all, normally it was difficult to practice using it on her own time due to how destructive it was. But on this mission, she had a good chance of needing to use it in some way or another.

She visibly shook a bit as she waited, shining her flashlight around the darkness.

OOC: Last call for more people. One or two more would be nice.

People can also start walking through the cemetery toward the elm now. I'll start this for real tomorrow.

Gage stood waiting right before the gates of the cemetery. It sure was a scary sight, like something straight out of a movie. It didn't phase him in the least bit at all though. The Pumpkin king. He muttered those words to himself. Trying to picture what this pumpkin king would look like. The image of a tall dark figure with a pumpkin for a head popped into his mind. Kind of cliché when he thought about it for a second.  He pointed his flashlight toward the gates and began walking toward them. He wouldn't know unless he went in there and saw this king for himself.

Upon taking a few steps inside, The atmosphere from the inside was different from the outside. For one, the air was a lot colder. Gage was able to see his breathe every time he exhaled. It blew away with the wind, similar to the fog that seeped around the tombstones. Pointing his flashlight in front of him and then occasionally to the sides, reading the names that were engraved on some of the stones. A small snapping sound caused him to whip his head into the direction of where it had came from, the flashlight closely following. It had came from a nearby tree. He shone the light at it for a minute before turning back toward where he was going. He let out a sigh of relief as he walked slowly.

Destiny walked into the graveyard. The change of atmosphere didn't really bother her. Once she discovered her gift when she was younger she visited places like these a lot. She didn't really bother with the flashlight either, it was tucked away on her person. Her scythe swung with her arm, but it was only small movements so it wasn't to dangerous.

Once she was good ways into the graveyard she crouched down in front of a tombstone. "I hope you don't mind me borrowing any of you if I need it.." She said to it. The Spring Prefect stared at the tombstone, then looked around. She noticed a shadow of a tree near her though it was kind of hard to see through the fog. Her red gaze returned to the tombstone. She closed her eyes for a moment to pay respects, then stood up. Hopefully the others didn't mind her doing so. Her ability was all about the dead, so she had to pay respects to them when she had the chance.

Other than the presence of the Beata students, the cemetery was as still and cold as a tomb. The only movement was the sway of the trees, rattling and creaking in the wind.

In the pitch blackness, two glowing orbs like fire appeared in the hole of the wych elm. You could feel the killing intent that seeped into the air, a sudden cold edge to the atmosphere like a razor blade pressed against your spine. It rose from the tree like something undead, first the rounded pumpkin head, and then the rest of its body, moving at strange and unnatural angles as it crawled out from the hole, rolling out as graceful as a dancer.

It presented itself with a wave of its long thin arms, a scepter of slender white willow in a gloved hand.

The Pumpkin King's presence was overwhelming, and for a moment, the air seemed twenty degrees colder. A mocking, crooked face was carved into the pumpkin, and in its mouth was the flicker of an invisible candle.

He made a twirling gesture like he was blowing a kiss, the ember flared up, filling the graveyard with an overbearing gold light, and a column of fire spewed out from its open mouth like a wave.

Ashleigh went in with the rest of the gathered students who - more than likely - had they decided that they weren't afraid of no ghosts, or pumpkins. She had made it through part of the graveyard when two glowing orbs, like fiery eyes, made their presence known. You could just feel it. She cocked an eyebrow in suspicion, but that turned to more of a worried expression when the formless figure gained shape. It appeared from the elm and stood before them, as if presenting for their viewing pleasure. And then it blew fire at them.

Letting out a shout of surprise, Ashleigh jumped clear, feeling the intense heat trying to scorch her back. However, despite that heat, it still felt cold. So very cold. It wasn't that warm beforehand, but now she could feel herself shivering. Like every ounce of heat had been sucked from her body.

Destiny jumped out of the way of the fire, so the Pumpkin King finally decided to show himself hm? She swing her scythe around and held with both hands. She wasn't too sure on what the thing actually was. She wasn't close enough to detect life-force or anything.. She didn't really care if it got any colder. It was just more fitting for the yard.

Pushing out some energy the girl raised two undead. Of course she went for the ones that were older, and were just bones, and not skin and bones. They did that whole creepy rising out of the ground thing, but it was a lot faster than what you saw in the movies. She made the two undead move forward to try to distract the thing, so she could get closer and find out exactly what it was.

Anima was quick to jump out of the way of the flames, narrowly avoiding being set ablaze. Quickly, she extended an arm and a hand with an open palm. As the green, superheated beam flew from her hand, the consequences of her aiming and firing so quickly became apparent. Rather than melting a hole in the Pumpkin King's chest, the beam fell short and instead hit the ground right in front of him, a forceful (although not fiery) and large explosion of dirt occuring.

There was an eruption of earth and soil, sending up sprays of dirt and grass, as the super-heated beam went slicing through the darkness and into the ground. The Pumpkin King went spinning, twirling into the air, for a moment looking like he'd been knocked sprawling by the blast, but instead he just flew and flipped backwards with the grace of an acrobat. Light as a feather, he landed on the elm branch. The bough bent under his weight, but then he leaped from it like a springboard, flying ten, fifteen feet up into the air above them, twirling his willow staff like a baton.

The skeletons never stood a chance. For a moment, he seemed to fly through the air, the crescent moon silhouetted behind him... but somehow, some way, in a fashion that didn't suit his skeletally thin form, he dropped like a boulder on top of one of Destiny's skeletons. He flew down at one in a blur, wreathed in wind and flames, and the sharpened end of the willow staff went skewering through the undead skull as easily as porcelain.

It all happened in a moment. He flicked the staff, and the skeleton went exploding into pieces, bone fragments flying all around them and clattering against the tombstones like hail. The Pumpkin King spun, and the staff went cracking against the next skeleton's spine in a silver blur. It collapsed in on itself instantly, all unnatural life snuffed out of it in a moment.

He turned his empty jack-o'-lantern eyes on Destiny, an ember flickering in its carved laughing mouth. There was maybe ten feet between them. The energy he gave off wasn't human. Or if it was, it hadn't been truly human for a long time. It was a cold black wave, like a numbing ocean tide, a sensation like blood at the back of your throat or a bone-deep chill. Was it even alive?
