Crying Glaciers [vacation topic] - Page 2 Empty

Jason paused in his reeling, glancing aside at the Winter again and giving her a slightly hurt look. He sighed, a slight grin on his face. "That didn't sound entirely enthusiastic." He said, raising an eyebrow at her before shrugging. "Don't worry. I'm not that terrible. How hard could it be, right?" He tried to give her a hopeful smile, watching as she pulled the hook out of the water, with a whole lot of nothing attatched to it. "Don't use the whole worm this time." He advised, watching her reach for the small, white container.
The Autunn suddenly seem a little happier than before, a tad more prideful. "The cutting I can do, don't worry about that. We'll just have to figure out which of us is the better chef." There was a hint of a question in that. Evelyn didn't seem like the type who stayed in the kitchen much, one reason being how skinny she was...

Evelyn caught the hurt expression with a sideways glance. "Uh... S-S-Sorry..." she mumbled, turning her head back down to shift through the soil. Stupid...stupidstupidstupidstupidstupidstupidstupid... The Winter dug through the cup and finally uncovered another victim to Jace & Eve Bonding Power Hour worm. With a shudder of revulsion she plucked it out and brought it up to the hook. "Don't use the whole worm..." What the hell does that mean? What am I doing wrong? Frowning, she pierced the worm with the barb and slid it up the length of the hook. She grabbed the other end and repeated the process, doing her best to ignore its thrashing. That should keep it from slipping. Hopefully. Whatever the hell Jace meant, this had to work just as well.

She pushed herself to her feet, reached back, and cast. The worm flew into the distance, a little pink speck, and landed with a faraway plop. Evelyn began to reel again, her smile regained. So far, so good. Even better, if Jace was still offended, he wasn't showing signs of it. If he'd even been offended at all... that stupid grin he wore had always made him easy to talk to, but now it was confusing her. Was it genuine, or all a facade? "W-Well... I-I don't r-really know how t-to... cook..." she admitted, sitting herself back down beside him. "B-But I can s-still h-h-help, I think..." The girl wasn't sure how confident she was in Jace's abilities, but it was at least relieving to hear that he knew how to gut it. Getting put out of commission by her first fish while on vacation sounded just like the sort of thing God would find funny. Evelyn glanced upwards. Don't get any ideas...

He thought he couldn't have been more obvious about the entire thing, but he supposed he really was just that terrible at explaining things. What he had meant was tear that little bastard into two pieces and put the smaller shred on there, but if what she was doing worked, he saw no reason to complain. Shrugging, he glanced back out if the lake again, watching her bait plop into the water and slowly draw back. He paused in his own reeling, watching hers. "Well, that's a relief... Sorta..." He joked. In his mind, though, he pictured them eating out the rest of the week - to avoid any kitchen disasters. It took him a second to notice that her line had disappeared further under the water, the tip of her pole bent forward in a sharp tug. "Especially now. You got a bite." He smiled.

Evelyn had felt it too ― she tugged, hard, and felt something tug back. "I... I-I do!" Kitchen woes temporarily forgotten, the Winter began to furiously reel. She had a fish! An actual fish! From an actual lake! Her thousand watt smile returned and at some point she clambered to her feet, though she couldn't have told you when. It was a fight as she struggled to pull it to dry land, and the fish was losing. Badly.

As it edged nearer and the line grew shorter and tauter the fish made a desperate flop near the surface of the lake, and Evelyn, for a moment, could spot shimmering, brilliant white scales. She edged backwards, the pole bowing in an arc, as the whitefish was slowly raised from the water by its mouth, splashing and struggling for its very life. A laugh escaped her lips as she let it slam onto the wooden deck, flopping and twitching. I got it. I actually got it. The best thing she had ever caught had been a boot when she was eight, and now she'd snatched a living, breathing fish out of the water on her second cast. Maybe her dad was some kind of bad luck...

Jason stood up, wedging his own fishing pole in a crack between the planks of the dock, so he could turn and watch her line fly closer and closer. He thought he'd heard a gasp of excitement when the fish had flashed out if the water, shimmering as it desperately tried to spit the hook out to no avail. He smiled when the fish finally made it to them, flopping around on the deck. "Nice catch." Jace said, glancing her way. He caught himself looking at her a bit too long. She'd just never seemed so happy, being able to drag a fish to the shore with a hook through the cheek. "We gotta put this one in the books. Miss White's first whitefish." Jason bent down, taking the metal piece out of the catch's lip, and sticking his thumb in the fish's mouth, holding it up with a pinch and motioning for Evelyn to take it the same way. Once she had it, he reached in his back pocket for his phone to take a picture.

Evelyn, nodding excitedly, copied Jace and pinched the pinched the lip. It was slimy as she slid her finger inside, absolutely disgusting, but she hardly noticed. The fish gave another weak little flap of its tail as she finally registered Jace's words. Oh. Right. Picture. Yes. A pang of self-consciousness broke through the buzz of excitement as she began to stealthily mess with her hair. She never had been very photogenic; Evelyn could make herself look like Claire Osborne in a mirror, only to come out resembling a horse in a photograph. Her last picture felt like an eternity ago, and that had been taken in Beata's courtyard right after her sorting, with a dagger in her hands... It was funny how she'd hated that thing back then. It really had been an eternity.

She looked down at her catch, brushing the bangs from her eyes (or would they look better hanging down?) and smiled broadly. A whitefish. Fitting, she supposed. It glared up at her helplessly with pleading, dead eyes, gasping for water, but there was no mercy left in her still, black heart.

Subconsciously rubbing at his temple, waiting for the asprin to kick in any minute now as he slipped out his phone, a crazy thin little thing - which was actually not all that new considering the time they were in, but it got the job done. The Autumn bent a little on his knees so he could get the perfect shot of her, "One... Two..." He counted down traditionally, though the only sign of him having taken a picture was the small smile down at the phone. "Alright one more and then we can head back. No cooler." He forgot to grab one. If he had, they could've just stuck the fish in there and kept on fishing. But now, though, they had to clean their catch asap.
Bending down a little next the Winter, he let one arm just barely hover around her as he leaned in and took a picture of them both. It was weird, and he didn't think much on it, but he felt a sharp urge to step away as soonas he'd gotten close - but that wouldn't have done well, right?
Luckily, unlike her, he was a very photogenic person. "Look good?" Jace asked, showing Eve the pictures.

Crying Glaciers [vacation topic] - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Crying Glaciers [vacation topic]   Crying Glaciers [vacation topic] - Page 2 EmptyMon May 19, 2014 7:18 pm

For a few moments she contemplated saying cheese!, but by the time her little dilemma was resolved, Jace was standing back up. Her smile didn't fade even after the camera went off. "Oh, ah, r-right," she said, gripping their whitefish a little tighter as it made another vicious flop with a strength born from desperation. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise that they'd forgot a cooler. That'd mean she'd only have to eat half a fish when the time finally came. Just half of the squirming, slimy, living thing in her hands right now... without gagging, or vomiting, or otherwise showing any displeasure whatsoever...

Suddenly, though, Jace's arm was hovering awkwardly above her, and Evelyn was brought back to reality. Stiffening, hoping to God that she wasn't blushing, she turned her beaming smile to the camera, lowering her fish ever so slightly as it stopped struggling and just stared hopelessly upwards, panting, gulping for air. She never noticed. He was close. Uncomfortably close, nearly brushing up beside her. Only the tiniest gap separated his arm and her body. The seconds ticked by slowly, with a sudden electric tension in the air. It was only three seconds, but as they passed, it felt like nine.

She leaned in to view the pictures. The first was fine, Evelyn supposed... Her smile looked ridiculous, her hair hadn't come out the right way, and she looked almost like a little kid crouching there. Not impressive, but at least this time she didn't come out looking like a horse. As for the second, well... maybe it was her imagination, but her awkwardness seemed to shine through. There was a subtle, but unmistakable, pink tinge to her cheeks now. "Mhm. L-Looks good," she said, still grinning. "Or y-you do, at l-l-least..." Evelyn added in a low mumble. Jace was looking great, because of course he was. A natural smile, a natural pose, a natural form... all except for that awkward, barely noticeable hover hand right above her shoulder.

Evelyn remembered her own phone pressing against her leg, tucked away in her pocket. She hardly used the thing, and it was pretty embarrassing, but... well... it'd be nice to have the pictures. "Y-Y-You'll have tuh-t-to s-send them t-to me."

Jace stepped back away from her, holding his hand out with his phone in one hand and shoving the other back into his topic for the time being. The first picture, he couldn't see much wrong with, the second almost made him wanr to go back for another on his own faults. He did notice the slight blush on her cheeks, but he supposed that he'd honestly been expecting that. "You don't look too bad yourself." He shot her a quick smile before going to gather their poles. He finished reeling in his line and closing the tackle box when she went on to ask for the pictures. Casting another momentary glance her way, he almost looked curious. He didn't even know that shevhad a phone. Still, in the end, his smile turned crooked. "You'll have to give me your number." Jace said simply, picking up their things and walking back to the room, leaving her to escort the fish.

Evelyn quickly moved to follow, fish clutched in two hands, only letting one go for a moment to scoop up her shoes. "I s-s-sup-suppose I-I w-will," she said, casting a last glance at the lake. It was a shame they had to leave so soon. It would have been nice to just sit off the edge of the dock for awhile, even with the water being as cold as it was... The surface still glimmered prettily in the sun, and it was as if it was waving them goodbye when a warm breeze rolled over it. She tore her gaze away and focused on Jace's back instead.

It wasn't long until they reached the room again. The fish was still alive, but barely, gaping and gulping pathetically in her hands. "S-S-So... n-now what?" Evelyn asked, glancing up from her catch. She raised an eyebrow. "A-Are... are y-you sure y-y-you kn-know w-what you're d-doing?" Maybe it was rude to ask, but the last thing she needed right now was food poisoning. Even know the trees were waving their branches tauntingly out the window, daring her to somehow get herself confined to bed.

After they had reached their room, he had set their things down near the door, only stopping to grab the worms and stick them into the small fridge. He half-glanced her glance her way, an overly thoughtful look on his face. "Mmm..." He hummed, frowning and washing his hands real quick. The blond shrugged, "I do. Probably." Jason smiled, searching through the kitchen for a cutting board and a good knife, which thankfully didn't take long at all. He assumed people who came here frequently caught their own dinner, so the tools to cook would be complimentary. Jace glanced her way, waving her closer, a bit eagerly to bring the fish. This was always his favorite part of fishing. It required a lot less patience, and meant that food would be served soon. "You wanna learn how?" He offered.

That's not very reassuring. She cracked a nervous smile and walked cautiously into the kitchen, holding the fish out with both hands. This won't be too bad. It's fresh fish. Most people would love to have something like this. Probably. Wouldn't they? Evelyn gripped the fish tighter to avoid it slipping onto the floor. Most people would also love to have slimy fish hands.../ The girl wasn't what anybody would call "most people," but Jace... probably knew what he was doing, maybe, and that at least meant that she wouldn't have to get her stomach pumped. It's just dinner. You saw a yeti and nearly stabbed Montare in the throat. You can handle dinner. Caught up in her thoughts, Evelyn blinked in surprise (and sudden distress) at his next comment. "M-M-Me?" Her eyes drifted to the fish again and her stomach turned. "At least you don't have to do the dirty work!" she'd been telling herself this whole time, like an idiot. It'd be easy to say no, a voice said in her head, but that was a lie. It was impossible to say no.

Evelyn looked back up again and grinned feebly. "Uh, s-s-s-sure..." Just don't blame me when you get salmonella.

Jace smiled far more genuinely, taking the whitefish from her hands and laying it down across the board. The only issue was that he hadn't done this in over a year, so his handiwork might've been a little rusty, but at least the job would be done, right? Although, since it was her first fresh fish after all, he would try his best to avoid fucking up. The young man took the knife, aiming it quickly unto a spot on the fish's head and jabbing it in quickly; saving it from the flaying. He would've done this while they were down at the dock, but he hadn't had the right knife for it.
"Alright, so the first thing you want to do is cut through the neck till you feel the neck..." He explained, half to himself and half to her. With a little force, he sliced through the creature, giving up slick and crackling sounds. "And run it down across the spine." Jace sawed his way through, slow and careful, before the knife reached all the way through, cutting the end of it's tail. Shooting Eve a quick smile, he flipped the halves open, revealing what was inside. It was a little messier than he'd like, blood covering the top and staining his fingers, but he thought it was an alright job.

Evelyn couldn't help but breathe deeply in relief as Jace took the knife himself. Right. Good. Yes. Of course. She jumped, however, when the knife came down in a sudden hard stab, and Evelyn couldn't stop herself from wincing as he slid the knife into the neck and sliced along the length of the whitefish's body. The girl forced herself to keep looking as Jace flipped it open, revealing its bloody insides. All she could think of was poor Sushi swimming cheerily round his tank. Hopefully Kimp didn't get any ideas while she was gone.... "Uh... Uh-huh... R-Right," she mumbled, nodding faintly. There's so much blood. Grossgrossgrossgrossgross... How could people eat this stuff? That thing had been alive a few seconds ago, and now they were eviscerating it.

She didn't let her weak smile falter. You told him you weren't squeamish. Don't throw up. "T-Then w-w-what?"

Jason felt a little encouraged, not noticing the growing look of sickness on the young woman's face and turning back to the fish. Carefully, he dug his knife under the otherside of the creatures neck. "Cut the other side away, so we can throw the head and tail away." The Autumn said simoly, getting the thick line of bones out much more quickly than before. "See?" Picking up the fish by the head, the long spine hung insistantly, only tail at the bottom. Jace moved to throw it in the trash, nearly brushing Evelyn with the fish. "Cut out the extra bones and skin it, it'll be good to go. Easy, huh?" He set out to finish.
